Where is al-Qaeda in North America

Here we are, September 13 and no significant activity on the part of al-Qaeda across North America.

Where are all the terrorists’ cells and individuals hiding? Did they not listen to the words of Osama bin Laden? I thought that the Remembrance Day of September 11 would have generated a few if not many actions against, in particular, white North Americans. There would be actions taken against the Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan; that is well understood; but across North America, nothing happened! Either the American anti-terrorist actions are forcing any al-Qaeda members to keep their heads low. It may even be that there are no al-Qaeda cells or there are inactive cells that may remain so for some time into the future.

The belief that there are al-Qaeda members in North America results in a continuing fear of terrorism resulting in the expenditure of many dollars to support all anti-terrorism activities. As well, the good citizens of North America will be subjected to the time consuming and debilitating security measures at the airports of Canada and the United States. Anti-terrorism has become a big industry with many dollars going to all the firms that are in the business. It is like a war industry. It has become a necessity and even to speak out against it might be deemed to be unpatriotic.

Of concern to the governments of Canada and the United States should be the potential recruitment by al-Qaeda of disaffected youth. Where will the come from? Can they be identified well before they fall into the mindset of terrorists? Can they be turned around to act as involved youth working to build a better world for others anywhere in the world? This concern needs to be addressed on a continuing basis.

Fear and Terrorism

Fear is everywhere and so often for some things we are able to take out insurance. In fact, insurance companies make money because they provide services that reduce our fear of catastrophes taking place that would make our living most uncomfortable.

Terrorism has now come into our daily lives though it is not as apparent here in Canada as it can be witnessed in the United States. Yes, those of us who fly have experienced long delays that have been caused by security measures that came into play after 9/11. As to insurance payments to reduce our stress from losses due to potential terrorism are not readily present, it takes little thinking to realize that the governments and airlines have imposed direct and indirect taxes on the traveling public as well as the expenses associated with additional security for the protection of public buildings. So much has changed in our society since 9/11.

The Canadian military has been involved in Afghanistan as a measure to stamp out international terrorism. We have gone through a spell of “support our troops” and if unwilling to hop on that bandwagon, one would be accused of being unpatriotic. There are some Canadians who say that they do not want any harm to come to our Canadian military personnel and they wish that no casualties would ever take place. To be realistic, there will be members of our military who will be numbered among the dead and injured. That is the history of our fighting personnel. It is their way of life, a life of living in danger. In fact those who are in danger because of physical location outside of Canada are awarded additional wages called “danger pay”.

To return to the “support our troops”, many Canadians do but they are not willing to support the government in its military objective of being in Afghanistan or, in particular, to extend the time that our forces would be there. This is not unpatriotic; it is a simple expression of how Canadians feel and with our sense of freedom, we can express our desires and interests.

Some Canadians would say that the Canadian Government should look into our own affairs and clean up our acts that relate to poverty, medical care, the treatment of our Aboriginal peoples and our homeless. The list could go on but there is a clear enough statement of our own problems and therefore why should Canada be spending money and sacrificing the lives of our Canadian personnel to solve the problems of peoples in other parts of the world?

We in Canada have been subjected to our own “state terrorism” when we can not obtain necessary health care services or see our homeless peoples on our streets which is particularly disturbing during our long cold nights of sub-zero weather.

Bring our troops home. Provide better health services. These are activities that politicians should endorse and make promises during elections that they will keep while in office.

Potential terrorism will always be with us. The Bin Ladens of the world will be with us for many years to come. We will be subjected to increased taxes, inconveniences during travels and some levels of fear. We will see people suffering the results of terrorist attacks. Perhaps we should try to understand why we are being subjected to terrorism or the threats of terrorism and do something to get at the root of the problem and do those things that are required to make our world healthier and happier.

Today the Prime Minister of Canada in his address to the Australian Parliament said:
“September 11, 2001 was truly a day that shook the world. Six years on, the horrific images from that morning still evoke anger, sorrow and – as intended – terror. The buildings may have been American, but the targets were every one of us: every country and every person who chooses tolerance over hatred, pluralism over extremism, democracy over tyranny”.

So we are targets because we have chosen tolerance, pluralism and democracy as a way of living. Should I laugh or cry? Both, first laugh then cry! Was the United States attacked because it had chosen tolerance, pluralism or democracy? Can we say this of other nations that have been subjected to attacks by terrorists?

Americans have been the targets for attacks because there are individuals around the world who disagree with American foreign policy, American interest in foreign economies for the wealthy Americans to become wealthier and to protect their interests abroad. There are many individuals around the world who say that America’s involvement in Iraq was not for any hidden weapons of mass destruction which have never been found but because of the resource, oil. It has been said that it is that simple.

Is Canada in the American back pocket? When it came to Iraq perhaps the answer is no; concerning Afghanistan, perhaps the answer is a big YES.

Now, a poem which was written on September 12 and published on September 13, 2001.

September 11, 2001

This day etched forever in a mind,
A deed so cruel, so unjust, so unkind,
In disbelief we saw so much,
Knowing death would so many touch.

Our tears were shed, emotions enflamed,
Our understanding and thoughts were drained.
But many found much courage deep,
They gave their lives, now they sleep.

Thus left behind, family and friends,
And many who wonder how to make amends.
Some in anger, some in fear,
War is the word we did often hear.

But American leadership is very strong,
Voices were raised in patriotic song,
A people in crises always do unite,
The scoundrel, the villain, they will fight.

And those with wounds do suffer now,

Remembrance, you served your country
When struck by the common enemy.

For in our freedom we do share.
All those who worked with much care,
To rescue all who could be saved,

Changing Times

I remember a publication by the name Changing Times which I read to keep abreast of opportunities to invest in personal health and wealth. Although I can’t say that I was as successful in gaining great wealth but when it comes to health, I must say that I feel great. Today two individuals commented on my appearance for they could not believe that I am as old as I am. But age brings with it, at least for me, feelings of not wanting to participate in activities such as voting. Perhaps a sense of futility has settled in with my expression of: “One party is as bad as another”. Am I cynical? Yes, of course!

I have refrained from writing items which I might share with others for no sooner do ideas come to mind, other ideas seem to replace that were held earlier. Yet, I do write many emails to individuals and organizations for by doing so I am able to disburden myself of thoughts which tend to depress me and by doing so I can get onto other topics. As an example I want to write a letter to the Imam of a local mosque which is under construction. It will cover some topics which I would not want to share with the general public but which I do want to present to this Muslim authority. It will no doubt be a “mild blast” which will cause him to think and to perhaps appreciate what others might be thinking. Some parts of the contents of that letter might be used in some future article. Now, I will share one small item which may reflect a linguistic and cultural gap that exists between the Muslim community and the wider Canadian community. A sign was posted on the property which read: “Absolutely No Trespassing”. To most North Americans, “No means No” and the additional word “absolutely” does not wear well on those who read the sign. As well, the noise and dust created by the continuous drilling for the excavation in bedrock for the foundation of the building had been an ongoing nuisance to most of the local residence. It has been said that on Friday afternoon during the prayer session attended by Muslim men, the drilling was halted. “How nice for them”, a local resident said, “While we have to put up with the constant noise”.

I have always felt better after I “speak my mind”. It so often helps to “clear the air” and lets me get onto other tasks.

Creativity

A guitarist picks up his guitar, picks a few notes, and strums a few chords, to loosen his fingers, to listen, to feel, to appreciate where he is at. After many strokes, music fills the mind, a few chords at a time. If there is a melody, a pleasant sound, even of discord, that might be the beginning of something greater that an idle guitar sitting in some corner, close, but at a great distance from creativity.

Creativity only comes with activity. One may have a "vision" of a beautiful sculpture, be it in clay, granite, marble, metal or wood. It might be of great size. It might be positioned in a park site and there to be seen by many from whom a few positive feelings might be generated, the extension of the feelings, interests, ideas and even ideals of the creator. Even if far removed from the original creative image, without any understanding of the why, a viewer might find the starting point of thought, of desire to create in any media available.

Creativity frequently comes from sources unknown and unrecognized. The loss to the self and the world comes when one hides from self and from others that which is deep within the self, forms of identity, of pleasure that remain hidden or dormant in semi-reverie, never to come out in the open where others might appreciate. Such a loss, never known to all, but a loss for the great opportunity was there, lost because it was not fulfilled. How many losses has the world experienced? There have been so many, unrecorded, never understood for non-exposure is nothingness. What creative genius responses from the self to the world have not seen the light of day, only being exposed to the creative imagination of the individual?

Loss and Lost

What is not shared is lost.

Reading, thinking and writing require time. The thinking that exists between the reading and writing is what is done by all of us who do read and write. The quality of thought I shall not comment on. When it comes to reading, those who do are selective based on the costs of the reading material, personal choice and the ability to grasp and understand the written word, the ideas of the writer. Few of us write. Though I have the desire at times to write, I find that what I want to write about has already been written with superior thoughts and quality of words that I might only aspire to. The tendency for me now is to read and think, within the time available.

I have not touched upon seeing, much of which occurs watching television and how that action takes away from reading and writing. It may provide relaxation and inspiration but may lead nowhere when we think of the development of the individual, his physical health and mental sanity. We also have participation in sports activities or should I say the non-participation for I speak again of television. Have we become a nation of obese individuals who consume food, television programs and movies to the point of losing the quality of health that might otherwise be ours?

There are Americans who complain about the quality of their educational system and the quality of their health programming for the people of their nation. There is a complaint of the quality of living that most Americans live with as the rich become richer and all others fall behind. Where is the great American dream? It is always there for the freedom that may always exist in American society is but a dream and all can possess this dream without cost.

In most societies there is a sense of greed, where more is always better. If money is the root of all evil, then the fruit from the American tree of life when consumed leads to corruption of many sorts. There is little need for exploration here for the results are most obvious to the many who understand.

For a word or two on religion I turn to prayer. There are prayers to God, the God of different religions, there are prayers offered to gods and goddesses. All of these prayers must be beneficial to those who pray but going beyond the words of prayer and the belief that goes along with those prayers is the continuing belief in hope. Without that hope the human race would surely collapse. There is the hope for a better world for our children and all subsequent generations. In spite of all the “acts of God”, there is prayer and most importantly the quality of hope that is within the hearts and souls of many. That is the root of survival of the human race. Let there be prayers and let there be hope. Let there be positive actions that reflect the goodness that exists within the hearts of most leading to the downfall of that which might be termed wicked. There is hope!

Police Brutality

From time to time we see on TV the actions, and sometimes the brutal actions of police officials against our citizens. If it were not for modern technology we would never become aware of these incidents. Without cameras and recorders the evidence that points to brutality would not be there.

When police brutality does take place there are two sides to the story. The police action is most often justified on the basis of the force exerted having been necessary. What I most often see does not agree with police statements. The police frequently have unions which come to their defense. Lawyers are also there to assist in every way possible.

What happens to the abusing and brutal officer? What happens to the abused citizen?

While under investigation police officers most often have their salaries continued although they are not on duty. This is most appropriate even though investigations may continue for quite some time. The question then comes up as to why it must take so much time. There is a story of one officer who actually completed a master’s degree in criminology during the time of an investigation, at full salary. Is this justified?

I believe that whatever rights that citizens have, these can be violated by the police.

Some officers are downright criminals.

We need the police. We deserve the best possible services that they can provide. They deserve our respect but when they do not show respect to citizens, where does that leave us? We question, we develop doubts and in the end our trust in them and our respect for them are diminished.

At times brutality and physical violence are also extended to verbal abuse and mental cruelty. Police officers sometimes show intolerance toward minority groups, older citizens, people of other languages and religions. There is a clear deficiency here. What facets of character or of moral integrity are missing?

Are there not tests that might be used to weed out applicants who have those characteristics that might lead to violence? Can training programs not include the development of sensitivity towards the aged, or individuals who might be experiencing physical or mental difficulties? Are the poor and the homeless treated in the same way as those individuals who are wealthy, who have big homes, expensive cars and no doubt political and social connections? I don't think so!

Something needs to be done!

Rumsfeld resigns

Good news! At long last, Rumsfeld resigns.

It is unfortunate that President Bush had not asked for his resignation in the past.

Rumsfeld had offered his resignation in the past but it was not accepted.

Bush was blind. Bush was deaf. Bush was dumb and dumber!

Would it not be wonderful if Bush were to resign? The Vice-president would take over. Would he be any better? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he were to resign as well?

The mid-term elections are over. My predictions turned out to be quite accurate. My “desires” were met. We have a Democratic victory and the world will be the richer; American society as well. The “Bushite & Bullshit” Republicans have been rebuked!
Americans, get out of Iraq. Bring your children home.

There was a time when American mothers did not want to have their children fighting “foreign wars” on foreign soil. Where were the American mothers this time around?

What a waste of American men and women! What a waste of money. I always liked the expression: “Yankee go home.” I did not like the expression, “Ugly American.”, I still do not!

Now, the expression should be; “Americans, go home.” Return to your family and friends, return to your world that needs to have your strength and dedication to a better way of life. You have many social problems that need to be addressed and can be resolved. If you had invested all the money spent on that war in Iraq to do good for your own people, you would be a healthier and happier.

Fear has been the concern of the day since 9 / 11. Security has been the order of the day.
It has become an “industry”. It has generated a complex of control. The government has the control and the power.

Canada as a county followed the example of Americans in instituting controls for the security of the nation. Now the laws have been challenged and found wanting. Canadians have suffered incarcerations and torture in the prisons of foreign nations. Americans have contributed to these activities out of their own fears and their search for security. That is where we find ourselves today.

So, to put my remarks in simple terms: “Bushite & Bullshit” Americans, get your house in order; get out of Iraq. Drugs and pollution are the true internal enemies of Americans. This is where your security industry should be involved. Americans are being controlled by foreign countries through the illegal drug industry. Americans are living lives that will be shorter and subject to ill health because of toxic chemicals and general pollution of the environment.

Americans, get your house in order before it is too late.

A Voice from the North

The American mid-term elections are almost upon us! I hope that my good friends in the United States will all see the light and vote for all Democrats.

Why? Americans need to have a change in government policies that relate to foreign countries. American “democracy” is not necessarily a “good” thing for other countries.

Might does not make right. America’s way of life is not that which should be emulated by other peoples. In fact, in terms of social problems America has enough to take care off without going elsewhere to impose its form of “democracy”. All Americans in Iraq should leave that country which would save America many more lives and the heavy expense in waging an “unjustified” war. Bush was in grave error. He lives in error and the sooner the Republican majorities are reduced to minority positions the better.

It is unfortunate that most countries of the world will live under the “might” of the American president. That “might” does not make “right”; he was wrong in the past and with a tighter control over him, the world will be spared of his continuing wrong-doings.

Our North American World

Has human behaviour in North America been changing for the worse over the past ten years? It might appear so as there are so many disclosures of corruption in government among political parties, business and industrial organizations and within religious organizations.

Could it be that many disclosures are now there because of today’s technology? There is so much information on television and the internet concerning the mid-term American election with many negatives relating to political personalities. I could almost feel sorry for the individuals whose lives have been shattered by revelations but at the same time I feel that they deserve what they are getting.

The question has to be, how many more leaders are guilty of corruption and other offenses against society? We may see many early retirements or many individuals who will not want to assume leadership positions that demand “no skeletons” in their closets.
Political life is hard enough as it is and the scrutiny that may be undertaken in the future may become just too much for many.

Support our military

Support our military! Of course, we should. How? Bring them all home; the sooner the better, from Iraq and from Afghanistan. Some say that it is unpatriotic to not “support” the military in Iraq. Let it be said that the best support is to bring them home to their families and loved ones. American can’t solve the problems of the world let alone the problems at home but, at least, all efforts should be directed to the solutions of the social ills at home.

The world would be a better place without American and Canadian military personnel in far-off lands.

When I think of Americans wanting to spread democracy around the world, to make a better world, I feel like laughing. The USA and Canada have enough problems at home relating to poverty, health, race and religion. All expenditures to support the military efforts abroad would go a long way to improve the lives of North American peoples.

The mid-term elections might bring about some changes but if the American economy and the wealth of the rich are dependent upon war, then wars will continue. The American economy has always done well before, during and after conflict abroad.

Now there is a form of internal “conflict” with an unseen enemy. This enemy consists of terrorists and many millions of dollars have gone to protect the American people from these terrorists. There is fear and more than enough generated fear to provide more dollars to “fight the enemy”; one wonders where all of this will end.

CBC Literary Awards

Yesterday, for the first time, I submitted a poem to the CBC Literary Awards.
Yesterday was the deadline date. I made it!

There are so many fine poets competing for these awards. So, why would I participate? I have run in a dozen marathons knowing full well I would be well back in the pack, to the very end. To the winner goes much glory. To others there is the thrill of completing the race. Likewise, there will be two winners for this literary award for poetry. The first place poem will bring $6,000 to the poet and for the second place winner, all of $4,000. I look forward to reading the winning poems.

But, I am also a winner. Under some personal pressure I completed the 1,000+ word poem in time. It went through some five readings resulting in minor changes to arrive at a point of sufficient satisfaction to send it in. Now, I am pleased. Job done and now I will move onto much shorter poems, more in keeping with my earlier productivity. Yet, I must say that the two longest poems that I have written were completed within the past five days. I trust that was done as a warm-up to the somewhat longer poem for the CBC competition. Next year, if I am alive and well, my submission will be sent in before the deadline or so I say today. In any case, that is a resolution, to be my first written resolution for the New Year, 2007.

below the surface
among the roots
that nourish
into the stalks and stems
profusion of petals my love
dreaming with colours

orange colours of blood
dried tears upon past smiling cheeks
kisses upon lips open to the light

from the dark earth we came
from haunting dreams of nothingness
to flowering life
passing days the stars

work the land
smell the flowers

how to resist passing time

I Remember

I hear the voices,
Carried by the soft breeze,
Across green meadows,
Through denuded trees,
Forests that have witnessed,
The passing of men,
Burdened by war equipment,
Orders given, direction taken.

Thoughts of home,
Family, friends and lovers,
Shivers, not of fear,
Of cold, damp, motionless air,
The sounds of distant actions,
Machine against machine,
Man against man.

They knew where life began,
They knew where life might end,
Explosions everywhere,
Vibrations of air and land,
Unnatural sounds, then darkness.

I hear the voices
Carried by the soft breeze
“I love you, I love you”
Sounds never heard,
By family, friends and lovers.

I hear the voices,
Of fallen comrades,
Days and years have passed,
But memories linger on.

I walk the meadows,
Among the flowers,
Between the markers,

How to win friends...

Many of us remember the words of Marie-Antoinette: “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”, translated: “Let them eat cake.” She didn’t win too many friends and her enemies took care of her later!

In an item on the social lives of Ottawan’s a write of a “social page” wrote :”Everyone who is anyone right now showed up to …” Wow, I wonder how many friends she made or better yet, how many enemies she made. Imagine all the people who did not show up who might have read her social page. What would they think? Who is she to make such a statement?

Now, as a “common man” I must say that I have no interest in such gatherings. Let them eat their cake, drink their wine and hobnob. Some may need it; others are obliged to attend. Our city is filled with members of parliament, other politicians, senators and embassy personnel. They gather and participate in activities while living for short periods of time in our town. The wealthy, the “upper class”, participate for longer periods of time continuing the never-ending social gatherings.

So we see a division, those who are “anyone right now” and all others. Yet among those who are not “anyone” are people of high quality and virtue, deserving of the highest praise for their existence, for their work and contributions to humanity. They could be labeled “common people” and I am one of those. This is said with a sense of pride and respect for all those who are not “anyone”.

The courage of conviction

It takes courage of conviction to attempt to change an Act of Parliament or the policies of government departments in Canada. There are a number of Canadians who are opposed to the monarchy and any display of allegiance to the Crown is abhorrent. There are many who are monarchists and supporters of all that relates to the Crown.

As a young man of sixteen years of age, an army recruit swore allegiance to the Crown. Later in his career he achieved the rank of Captain and found himself no longer a believer in displaying loyalty to the monarch. As an example he found no reason to salute the queen at such an event like a mess dinner when a salute is required when the anthem “God save the Queen” is played.

There are Canadians who are loyal to the Canadian military and country but have little desire to serve under the Crown. During the two World Wars Canadian personnel served with dignity and many Canadian personnel either died or returned as wounded. They served for “King and Country” which was understandable. But today Canada has its own constitution and many believe that Canada should be an independent and free nation without any subservience to a “foreign” monarch.

My personal view is that Canada will achieve a status of independence within twenty years. Why? Simply, Canadians are loyal to Canada. Is there a need to have a Queen?
Absolutely not! Within twenty years the majority of Canadians will be second and third generation descendents of immigrants. Those immigrants did not come to Canada because there was a sovereign living in England. They came because Canada offered a land where a person could improve their lot in life in a democratic nation. As well, the question of which “God” is to save the Queen? Religion will come into the picture and many Canadians will want their religious beliefs respected.

I wish the Canadian Captain the best in his law suit which is against the top military person and the Canadian Government. It takes courage to stand up against the system. One thing is almost absolutely sure is that he will never be promoted again; his career will come to a stand still. Yet, he will be saluted by those Canadians who want the Queen’s representative to simply leave town.

The Costs of War

The costs of wars are innumerable and the most devastating relate to human suffering and death. The pains to families created by war live on well after any war’s termination.

Without reference to the human tragedy of the war in Iraq, the costs of the war to the American public stood at $330,822,018,254 for a brief second at 6:26PM (EST).

How might these dollars have been spent to alleviate the human suffering of countless Americans who exist in poverty, lacking in adequate food and health care services and who frequently are homeless or have inadequate shelter? And there in America they have democracy and the war in Iraq has been said to be waged in part, to spread democracy.

Is this being realistic or plain stupid? Should “charity” not begin at home?

Now, for a little story coming from the Talking Tree:

The Talking Tree talks about American trust.

Two young Americans go camping with a cooler packed with beer and sandwiches.
After a day of walking they come across a beautiful spot for their camp. Realizing that they have forgotten a bottle opener, the older American says to the younger: “You must go back and get that bottle opener. Without it we can’t drink the beer.” “No way,” says the younger, “by the time I get back all the food will be gone.” I won’t, I promise,” says the older guy, “just hurry.”
Two days pass and there is no sign of the other American. Some what exasperated and quite hungry the older guy bites into a delicious sandwich. Suddenly the younger guy jumps out from behind some big rocks and shouts: “I knew it…and I am not going!”

So much said for American trust, by the "Talking Tree", for a little laugh.

The unwritten poem.

I thought for some time that I would write a poem today to serve as an anniversary statement about my feelings five years after the poem "September 11, 2001" which I wrote on September 12, 2001. Here we are, five years later and I find that I have no interest in writing that poem. My blog of September 07, 2006 included the poem "September 11, 2001".

I recall how deeply I was affected by that terrible day. From December 20, 2001 through to January 5, 2002, I neither turned on my TV nor read any newspapers. I went into “seclusion” and listened to music and read a number of books. I did not want to be faced with the horrible images that we have all seen or to be exposed to on-going commentary relating to the Year 2001. I had had enough, a point of super saturation!

Yesterday I read a few words from my newspaper and caught a few of the American President’s words. I read on the internet some words from an address by the Canadian Prime Minister. I got the feeling that both these men were attempting to justify their countries involvement in war. Their solution to terrorism seems to be to fight, to kill all those individuals who can be described as terrorists before they come to North America.

What those governments should be doing is reviewing all the things that the Americans had done around the world to turn the feelings of so many against them. That would not be such a difficult task but that would be admitting to facts and there would be the ensuing feelings of guilt. But, Americans should never feel guilty. They believe in the right, but their right is simply might. America will be brought to its knees by individual terrorists even as today there is fear and that fear is being met by security measures that are costing the American public “big bucks” with no end in sight. Security is a big business. As in most business ventures, some individuals profit and live the “good life”, they eat, drink, and are quite merry, living their lives in luxury while many millions of people around the world go homeless, are hungry and lack in medical care; they suffer.

Lest we forget, where were the Americans in 1939 when many nations of the world were involved in warfare to defeat Hitler and his associates?

I would like to think that Americans in general are good and kind people. Americans are really friendly. I have many American friends and I like them very much. So what is the problem? Can Americans really believe what their President has to say?

We now learn about the earlier justification for the war in Iraq. Many untruths were told. Even without the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, it is said that there was a plan in place to attack Iraq. Could it be that there are war games on paper? I can see that for any country that might become an enemy there is a “war plan” and that includes Canada.

America has the might but does that give it the right to impose its will on many foreign countries? Might there be a plan in place to attack Iran? Is the American government preparing the people psychologically to accept a war there?

The Americans supported Israel in its “stupid” war against the people of Lebanon. Their justification was that two soldiers had been kidnapped by the Hezbollah and they wanted them back They had hoped to teach a lesson to one and all. But Israel learned the lesson and the Americans did too.

Now I wonder about those two soldiers. Were they really captured? Are they still alive? Is it possible that all that we have learned are lies and fabrications? Is it possible that this possible fabrication was a set-up for the “war”? This is stuff for a novel and the questions are perhaps not worthy of being written for this blog but I did get something off my chest and perhaps, just perhaps, there will be some reaction.

It is now recognized that all the heavy equipment, planes, bombs and military personnel can’t defeat terrorists on their own soil. There are lessons to be learned from American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan and from the recent Israeli war.

So there is no poem today, just words reflecting feelings that I have today that I did not have five years ago. But there was a poem yesterday that might be read.

Five years from now, if I am still alive and you are as well my dear reader, I hope to write a poem for you.

It is all about oil...

“It is all about oil” said a young man in Bosnia. He was referring to late intervention of the Americans in the Bosnian war. Had oil been in Bosnia, the Americans would have been there much earlier. It was his belief that the Americans are central to all that takes place in the world.

There is little doubt in the minds of the educated people of the world that the United States of America is the most powerful nation in the world. They are also viewed as the wealthiest, great spenders on the luxuries of life. If viewers of film and television believe what they see, they develop a completely false image and understanding of the American situation. A much better understanding of the U.S. would be gained by reviewing what too place during the Katrina disaster and what followed for a full year. How much criminal activity took place, how much greed was displayed, how the political processes failed, all of these happenings and much more would surely provide foreign governments with a clear understanding of America the Great. American the Great was brought to its knees. America is like a two sided coin; one side shows the positives, the other the negatives. Even for many Americans, their lives are holding the view of the negatives. Many of the systems in America need revision or improvement, to benefit all Americans. If one looks at the health care system, the education system, the political system, the employment system and the system for “sharing the wealth” of the nation, a quick conclusion could be drawn that America is sick. The country is alive but not well. Many of the maladies are curable but that would require a reshuffling of the cards of wealth. The wealthy are too much so. The poor are too much so. A distribution system to “share the wealth” is necessary. But the wheels of government are controlled by the wealthy. This has little to do with which party is in power. All that being said, it is necessary to say that there are many other nations on earth which are sick, for many of the same reasons. In fact, some nations are much sicker.

The world is sick. There are so many wars taking place. Weapons are in the hands of children and these are being used to kill “others” who are different for whatever reasons which might include language, culture and religion. Has it not been ever thus? What does history tell us?

The cry of “Yankee go home!” can still be heard and if not as loud as in the past, it still is there in the hearts and minds of many people. Could one ever have imagine that an individual could “declare war” on the United States of America? Probably not but it did take place. Since that declaration was made, American has changed. There is rampant growing fear for the security of the nation. Security as an area of employment has increased rapidly to match the fear that exists. As we approach the fifth anniversary of 9/11, that fateful day that changed the American world for ever, I would like to share a poem written on 9/12 of 2001.

September 11, 2001

This day etched forever in a mind,
A deed so cruel, so unjust, so unkind.
In disbelief we saw so much,
Knowing death would so many touch.

Our tears were shed, emotions enflamed,
Our understanding and thoughts were drained.
But many found much courage deep,
They gave their lives, now they sleep.

Thus left behind, family and friends,
And many who wonder how to make amends.
Some in anger, some in fear.
War is the word we did often hear.

But American leadership is very strong,
Voices were raised in patriotic song,
A people in crises always do unite,
The scoundrel, the villain, they will fight.

And those with wounds do suffer now,
For you in the future we do vow,
Remembrance, you served your country
When struck by the common enemy.

For in our freedom we do share.
All those who worked with much care,
To rescue all who could be saved,
So many images in our minds engraved.

This day we will never forget,
A remembrance day to beget,
A day our strength to renew,
With blessings, many to accrue!

Afghanistan Today

Canadian Forces in Afghanistan have sustained a number of deaths and many casualties to date. Now that they are committed to the battle scene all Canadians at home can do is to wish the military personnel there the maximum safety and security possible. The Nation is in morning with those families which have lost members as a result of military battles.

An earlier Canadian commitment was that of helping in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. This changed to supporting the fight against the Taliban. A fight under the American led counter insurgency war in Afghanistan.

I would prefer to see Canadians involved in the destruction of this year’s poppy crop which will only fuel the drug trade in North America. No doubt the profits from drug sales will support the Taliban and strengthen the drug trade around the world.

Canada needs to set its objectives for its external affairs in keeping with the improvement of the world through the reduction of poverty, the reduction of the AIDS problems in Africa. Canada needs to be a country that supports improvement in the life circumstances of all of humanity. There is a role to play and this must be far from the killing territory of Afghanistan.

American society is turning away from supporting the Republican Party in part because of the war in Iraq. If the Democrats are successful in the next Presidential election, will the American nation become any more secure? I believe the number one concern of Americans will be internal security. All the money spent in the support of the external wars should be used to improve the lot of Americans and to assist in the solution of the multiple social problems that exist.

Canadians in Afghanistan

Canadians do not belong in Afghanistan. What is the justification for their being there? Time passes, things change. Canada has entered into a long term commitment to the “war” effort in Afghanistan. Why?

I am not overly concerned about the dollars that are being spent to help the people of countries that suffer from war activities. I do not support Canadian involvement in military activities. Too many of our military personnel have died to date. Now we learn that our Canadian military personnel have brought about a death and wounding of police personnel who are supposed to be friendly to our forces. What went wrong? Will this happen again? Perhaps!

Are we sending military personnel who lack the appropriate training to carry out the missions assigned to them? Do they have the necessary equipment and sufficient personnel to do what is required? Who is responsible for the strategies being employed? Are the rules of the “game” changing? Are we there to support American policies and American interests in Afghanistan? Is Canada there because Canada did not join the Americans in the war against Iraq? There are many questions being asked by Canadians. More will be asked in the future.

An election may be called to justify the Canadian settlement of the “soft wood” problem with the United States. I think that an election should be called on the basis of the questions being asked concerning the Canadian policies regarded Afghanistan. Would the Prime Minister dare to call an election now? I doubt this very much!

What a Waste!

The Los Angeles Times recently published an article relating to terrorism. I noted the words: “We need to support democratic societies and stop terrorism at all costs.” The following is the complete article which I read.

LOS ANGELES – “A group of 85 Hollywood notables – among them Nicole Kidman, Bruce Willis, Dennis Hopper and Sylvester Stallone – have placed their names on full-page ads accusing Hamas and Hezbollah of being terrorist organizations.
   “We the undersigned are pained and devastated by the civilian casualties in Israel and Lebanon caused by terrorist actions initiated by terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah and Hamas,” said the statement, which ran recently in the Los Angeles Times, Hollywood Reporter and Variety. “If we do not succeed in stopping terrorism around the world, chaos will rule and innocent people will continue to die. We need to support democratic societies and stop terrorism at all costs.”
   The effort was put together by movie producer Danny Dimbort and Avi Lerner, in conjunction with a variety of others, including Israel’s consul general in Los Angeles, Ehud Danoch.
   “As 1 million Israelis sat in bomb shelters and 3 million were in the line of fire of Hezbollah and Hamas missiles, it strengthened the citizens of Israel to read that high-level members of the Hollywood film industry came out so clearly against terrorist organizations, which threaten them and free societies all over the world,” Danoch said.

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

We know that many people around the world want to stop terrorism.  Now we see Israeli supporters in Hollywood coming forth to express the need to stop terrorism.

Israel is a “democratic society.” These Hollywood supporters agree that there is a “need to support democratic societies and stop terrorism at all costs.” That sounds like supporting the Israelis after war against Hezbollah, to justify the atrocities committed against the people of Lebanon by the Israeli military.

There are people in the world who view the actions of Israel as terrorism at its worst. If Israel could have waged a war that would have lasted one week and which would have brought about the results desired, perhaps the peoples of the world would close their eyes and forget what did take place. But no, the war continued for over one month with a greater loss of lives of innocent Lebanese civilians and greater destruction of property and the economy of Lebanon than occurred in Israel. In any case, what a waste!

To respond to terrorist activities with a form of terrorism can not be condoned; there is no justification there! Israel went too far! The Hollywood notables have gone too far. They would do better spending their money on eradicating the many social problems within their American “democratic” society.

Cluster Bombs

Cluster Bombs were used in Lebanon! Their use will result in more casualties from a war that was not started by the people of Lebanon. How many future terrorists are created with each death of innocent civilians?

The war in Iraq and that in Afghanistan are “creating” many terrorists for the future. When will the military actions of the United States and some other nations end? Even if these wars are “won”, in truth they will be lost. Just think about the many innocent people who have died and will die and those who have been wounded in body and spirit who have lost relatives and friends as well as property.

Why are these wars being waged?

All peoples from those countries which brought wars to these foreign lands will suffer as they come to understand and feel the results of these wars on those distant lands.

The “free” world, the world of democracies will feel the wrath of terrorist activities for many years to come. These democratic countries are suffering from fear and are continuing to pay for the required security measures that are in place and the many more that will come on force in the future. Even after the wars end, the democracies that waged the wars will continue to suffer from the after shocks of terrorist activities.

Osama bin Laden “declared” war on the United States of America. That “declared” war will continue to be waged long after bin Laden’s removal from this earth.

Now, I admit that I know very little of what is taking place around the world but I must question why the world is in such a state of conflict, of poor health, of hunger and of ill-will to others. What part do religious leaders and religions have to do with what exists and the potential of peace in the future?

What does GOD have to do with all that exists?

A Man of Action

Although all Canadians do not agree with all of the policies and programs endorsed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, there is little doubt that he is a man of action. There are almost daily news items relating to decisions that the government has made.

I, for one, disagree with the government’s long-term policies relating to Afghanistan. In fact, I wish that the Canadian military who are there would return home. We have enough internal problems needing resolution. The dollars spent on the resolution of external world problems would go a long way to help resolve our many Canadian social problems.

Canadians have had week-kneed prime ministers in the past. It is refreshing to see what our “new” prime minister has accomplished during his government’s first six months.

Wars are horrific

Wars are horrific and the consequences are felt by the innocent in ways that only they can hardly understand. The statistics from wars include casualty rates but what is not included are the family casualty rates relating to the loss of bread-winners, loving partners, the children who grow up not knowing relatives who have died or children who live with family members who live for years suffering from war wounds be the physical or mental. These are among the true tragedies of wars. Economic systems are ruined and social systems are as well. But this is the history of the developed parts of the world. It has been recognized that in-breeding is not good for a people and that the infusion of "new blood" does wonders for the people. Invading forces that conquer leave behind a generation of children who have mixed parentage coming oftentimes from different races and religions. Here we sometimes see the blending of cultures.There can be no doubt that my ancestors have come from different countries, religions and cultures. In fact that I do not doubt that my ancestors would include murders, rapists and all sorts of other criminals. My roots go deep and the recognition of this permits me to think in more global terms with a sense of love and justice for all.

Winners and Losers

There are winners in all wars! Who might they be?

Before and during wars the manufacturers of weapons, munitions, and transportation equipment owners all profit.

After wars companies that do the reconstruction, suppliers of materials and all resource that are used along with supporting industries all profit.

Even politicians is some countries receive paybacks and other benefits which though possibly illegal is often accepted by the people as that is the way things are done. There are times when politicians have personal investments or their relatives and friends have investments in those companies that stand to make large profits.

There is nothing new in these observations. This is simply a reflection on the realities of our world and human nature.

Now, who are the losers?

The losers are those individuals who gave up their lives fighting and those who became physical and mental casualties of the war. As well, their families and friends suffer.
The costs of goods and services frequently are increased. Look for example, the price of oil and the subsequent gas at the pump prices that all consumers face. We can easily relate to the fact that there are many losers.

As well, the war efforts are supported by all taxpayers. The quality of life of all is negatively impacted.

We can at time be both winners and losers and in the trade-off, accept that fact. Perhaps the hardest aspect to be absorbed by individuals is to live with the stress induced by the war, from day to day and the many days that follow the end of the war.

Wars are destructive of property and human beings and these losses go on for ever, from generation to generation. Genocides have taken place during wars and these will never be forgotten. One can look at the hate that exists between and among nations and how memories of past wars are not easily forgotten, if ever. How can the children of those who gave up so much during wars ever forgive those on “the other side?”

I just learned that the meeting in Rome to move to a cease fire in Lebanon ended in utter failure.

What is happening was so predictable. The Israelis have convinced the US that it wants time to take care of its northern problem, the Hezbollah. Although Israel with its powerful air force which has been highly successful in the past, it can’t deal with the existing situation. Tanks may move into Lebanese territory but the more tanks that are there the more targets there will be; the Hezbollah may be able to take care of these.

Now, just wait until the Hezbollah unleash longer-range rockets against more southerly cities in Israel.

The nations of the world will become more united it their criticism of Israel and the US.

What a Mess

The Cold War ended in 1989 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union took place on December 25, 1991. Shortly thereafter, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan completed their book Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. We are now in a time of crisis with a “war” between the nation of Israel and an organization called Hezbollah. To date, the Hezbollah are holding their own to perhaps to the great surprise of the Israelis.

Sagan and Druyan wrote that in spite of the end of the Cold War, the world was not “home free.” They explain: “New dangers edge their way onto center stage and old familiar ones reassert themselves. We are confronted with a witches’ brew of ethnic violence, resurgent nationalism, inept leaders, inadequate education, dysfunctional families, environmental decay, species extinctions, burgeoning populations, and increasing millions with nothing to lose. The need to understand how we got into this mess and how to get out seems more urgent than ever.” Fifteen years later that quotation is as fresh as it was when the ink was drying on the pages of that book.

This “war” in the Middle East is a mess. So many unnecessary deaths, so much property lost, so much of two nations’ economic systems destroyed and with what final outcomes? The Sagan/Druyan words have as much merit today as they did when they were written. Somehow though I wish it would be otherwise, I believe that little will change in the next fifteen years. The Middle East will remain in turmoil.

The sons and daughters of the present Hezbollah will carry their torches of freedom ever forward. They will desire nothing less than the destruction of the Israeli nation. Israel may win this “war” which is but a big battle; the true war is yet to come

Middle East Wars

For centuries there have been wars in the Middle East. What is taking place in Lebanon is the result of Israel, once a secure and powerful nation that has fought wars successfully in a few brief days, much shorter than the present “war”, to be now involved in battles that are continuing.

No matter how this conflict ends, the Hezbollah will be the winner. The once powerful nation of Israel with its much superior air power and weaponry is now faced with a determined group that is military and has a political identity in Lebanon.

Even if every member of the Hezbollah military were to die, within a few short years another powerful military will come forward as the children of the many individuals who have suffered because of family members who have died or became physical and/or mental casualties. Other Muslim peoples will view the actions of the Hezbollah as heroic; all military deaths will be viewed as act of heroism. The result will be an Israel that will be viewed as a nation that can be successfully fought by an enemy using tactics and with weaponry though inferior, used by a determined foe, will be able to bring the proud nation of Israel to its knees. The economy of Israel will suffer. Many nations of the world will hold contempt for the present over-zealous military actions of the Israelis.

The United States and Britain will suffer a further loss of respect by many nations of the world. Canada which has marched in lock-step with the Americans will also suffer. Canadian values are different from those held by Americans. Canada has in the past often held its own ground and not followed the US, for example into the war in Iraq.

There can be little doubt that The Americans have wanted this “war” to run longer to give the Israelis time to bring the Hezbollah to a position where no further launching of rockets would be possible. The British have gone along with the American decision not to seek a cease fire at the present time.

To bring the Hezbollah to a point of stopping the launching of rockets is an impossible task. Hezbollah will move farther back and regroup and will continue to using guerilla tactics to harass and “control” the Israelis. Now we have not seen the total power of the Hezbollah. We have not seen the unleashing of other rockets which are more powerful and which have a longer range.

Israel may have some friends in the Middle East who at may condemn the earlier actions of Hezbollah but may turn to the support of Hezbollah and in particular as Hezbollah continues to inflict heavy wounds on the Israelis.

The non-cease fire position of the Americans will do greater damage to Israel, damage that the Israelis had not anticipated. Israel will find itself in a position of being obliged to withdraw before meeting its earlier objectives and it will not stop its warfare without being obliged to complying with a UN resolution. Israel will not stop on its own initiative for that will be a sign of giving up, of having “lost” the battle.

Middle East Interests

There is little doubt that the US supports Israel in its present war in the Middle East.
The UN may want to have a cease fire but the US would like to give Israel more time to get into Lebanon with its ground forces.

Israel and Lebanon have been involved in warfare in the past. Israel did occupy Lebanon for a period of time. This gave birth to Hezbollah which is supported by many individuals who have either suffered directly from the actions of the Israelis or are well aware of the historical military happenings in Lebanon.

Now, my limited view of the history of wars leads me to believe that the suppliers of military equipment, weapons and ammunition, including highly sophisticated bombs are making “big” dollars. In whose pockets do these dollars end up? Some Americans have lived very well off of the rich rewards from the sale of military goods. Before the US entered each of the World Wars, sales of materials of war were made to the eventual enemies of the US. In its fight against the Nazi forces many of the eventual allies died from the war materials sold to the “axis” powers.

If an embargo were put into effect, supplies to Israel would dry up and the war in the Middle East would end and the big loser would be Israel and the US for the Muslim powers of the world would be stronger in support of all radical organizations that oppose, in particular, the US.

I wonder where Canada stands in all of this. Canada entered into some form of long term commitment to the war in Afghanistan in support of the US. Canada, under its Prime Minister Stephen Harper appears to be “marching in lock-step” with the US. Do the peoples of Canada really want this?

Canada and the US would do much more for the peoples of the world if internal problems of health, education and the treatment of aboriginal peoples would become a stronger focus for their administrations. After home problems and issues and problems were resolved then external situations could be addressed, in particular along side with other nations through the direction of the United Nations.

I have little doubt that Hezbollah will become stronger from day to day as Israel continues its incursion into Lebanon and the rather indiscriminant bombings of areas where civilians live. If Israel has justification for the excessive force being used in Lebanon, I wonder what it must be. Has Israel and the US used a situation to do what it has been planning to do for some time, in particular as the US is strongly opposed to the government of Iran. Might Iran become involved more strongly in any support given to Hezbollah and the US then come to the support of Israel and attack Iran? Did the US not become involved in a war with Iraq without the guidance and support of the UN?

Now, where do the British under Prime Minister Tony Blair stand? On a continuing basis, the US can almost be assured of the “Blair” support.

It has been said that in world politics, the British have supplied the “brains” and the Americans the “bucks” to support and advance the cause of world domination of Christianity. Now could it be that the Muslims of the world vie for the religious control of the world?

Are we involved in a world war, the WWIII? Throughout history individuals and families have suffered greatly because governments wanted to have more control of world affairs and of course internal affairs for the benefit of the leaders and those who possessed wealth. I have lived through two world wars and many other wars around the world. I have experienced the suffering that results from war. I have seen the destruction of villages, towns and cities. I have seen the suffering of families. I have witnessed too much and am filled with sadness for those in Lebanon who are refugees, for all those whose lives have been lost and the suffering that has resulted for their families, the loss of property, and the loss of happy days with comfort for tourists and families receiving relatives from foreign lands?

Will Lebanon ever recover? Yes! Who will gain from this recovery? Those who are presently wealthy and the reconstruction of the country will make many wealthier! This will be simply history repeating itself!

Crisis in the Middle East

I left the world of computers and TV after the first two days of the present crisis. It was good to get away for not only did I leave a world of stress both physical with the high temperatures and humidity but the Israel and Lebanon situations with the destruction of people and property was too much to take!

Returning to find that the situation is getting worse is most unpleasant. I wish we all could “hide” or escape from all the unpleasant and horrific news.

I have the feeling that the US is backing Israel in all of its activities but must not disclose its interests there. Americans do not like what the Iranians are about in terms of the development of potential nuclear power but can’t do anything about it directly. Now I believe Americans are entering a stage of greater fear for there is a threat that Hezbollah members and supporters in the US could take action on many internal fronts. I believe the internal threats are greater than any nuclear threat from Iran, now and into the distant future.

So where does that leave the Americans. Bomb shelters of the WWII vintage are useless. Being involved in ground warfare with other nations has proven to be useless. Diplomacy with some countries has proven to be useless.

With all the fear that will be there, Americans will suffer from additional stress and their individual lives will be shortened. All the American wealth will become useless for individual survival.

What does peace mean to the US? What does peace mean to the poor of the world? What does peace mean to the many refugees and slaves that are around the world? I can’t believe that peace will ever be there. The most we can hope for will be the reduction of pollution and poverty in the world. The wealthy of the world need to share their wealth that so often came from the labors of the poor and of the slaves.

Americans can’t hide from the fact that the land on which they reside did belong to the Native Peoples. Nor can many of those living in Latin America. Many live well or perhaps too well. They need to share or have governments take money and much of their wealth away to help solve the problems of the poor of the world, including health and education. Americans could start at home. All the money spent on the war in Iraq could have solved many internal problems and issues.

So, Americans, where do you stand?

Our World

What is our world coming to?

We in Canada support a military that has been committed to a “war” in a foreign country.
We, a small county in population attempt to solve problems in a foreign county while many of our internal problems remain unsolved and many important issues unresolved.
Why are we involved in Afghanistan? Why did the prime minister commit Canadian forces to provide military personnel well into the future?

Around the world today there are many wars going on. There are many reasons for these wars but we in Canada are not involved in these. I believe that we should be involved in providing economic assistance to countries on a selective basis to alleviate social problems relating to food and health and education. There are areas in which we can specialize, but warfare should not be our strength.

Should we have a military force? By all means we should for the defense of our borders against the intrusion of foreign powers, organizations and individuals that are bent in doing whatever that is not in our interests. But fighting a war on foreign soil is not what I believe the majority of Canadians would ever desire.

We hear today of a crisis in the Middle East relating to Israel and Lebanon. Where does Canada stand? Where should we stand? The organization known as Hezbollah has been in existence for some 25 years and is both a political and military organization. Until the government of Lebanon eradicated this organization, we might expect serious consequences to follow.

The United States has learned serious lessons from its involvement in Iraq. One is that it is not wise to adopt aggressive action against foreign nations. It has been a hands-off situation with regards to Iran and more recently with North Korea. Diplomacy seems to be the key word and having other nations become more involved in attempts to resolve international problems. Of course the threat of nations having nuclear power or the capacity to use weapons of mass destruction against the United States causes fear, intense fear to spread across the country. Since 9/11 the US has been filled with fear and has suffered the loss of freedoms. Any visit to Washington will reveal many security measures that have been adopted. Much money has been invested or been directed to security through the employment of individuals and in the expansion of government organizations to meet the challenges that exist. One aspect of the WAR in which the US is engaged has already been lost and that is the loss of freedom or a sense of freedom and in its place the acquiring a sense of fear. What an utter shame! What a shock, the trading of fear for freedom!

What is our world becoming? Are we a planet plagued with environmental pollution and religious and social pollution as differing religious groups fight for supremacy in the name of GOD? Of course we have seen wars in which family members fight against one another, where particular religious groups fight members of the same religious groups praying to GOD to defeat their enemy; yes praying to the same GOD to have other human beings die! What is our world becoming? We have seen this from ancient days to the present. What have we learned? Of what value these learnings when little has changed.

Yes, I have the questions; we all do but our governments are there to do what is right. They have not been successful in the past so what does the future hold?

I guess we will live with the pollutions that we have created and the wars in which we are involved, directly or indirectly.

Hidden Talent

Hidden Talent

Some people have blockages to their productive output. As potential creative artists they deprive the world of the beautiful output that should exist for all to enjoy and cherish. Other artists do not share what they have already produced for many reasons which I will not explore at this time.

I recently read two poems written by a young lady. As a reader of much poetry, I deem these poems to be of high quality. Yet, at this time the poet will not consider having her works published. My role now is to convince her to submit her poetry to different publishers. There are so many opportunities to have poetry published. Another thought is to encourage her to read her poetry before receptive audiences; there are many in most cities in Canada and around the world.

Now for a quick quote from Pablo Picasso that I will share with this poet and others who hide their talents. “The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.” And, a few words from Sonia Choquette that carry deep meaning: “The power of words is real whether or not you are conscious of it.”

I would encourage all writers to share their works. Is there a better time than now?

A New Focus

A New Focus

After several months of travel in Europe and the United States, I have come to the conclusion that no matter how much I see, no matter how much I read, unless my thoughts are shared with others, all is lost.

One thought that recurs time and time again is that when I die, my associations with others, all my educational experiences leading to knowledge and understanding will die with me. Yet some of my words used in writing and discussions which I have shared with others may continue in that some individuals have been influenced in a positive sense.

My new focus will be on writing my ongoing thoughts and the sharing of ideas with others. I will not place emphasis on the criticism of the actions of others though I will not hesitate to express my personal point of view. I have become more aware as time passes of the political decisions that are being made which so often reflect the interest of those behind the political scene who have power and influence politicians to a degree that I had not been willing to believe. This has been magnified by my observation of some local politicians and their voting behaviour.

I have become disillusioned with the actions of the police who more often than people are aware of assume powers to which they should not take. How many displays of using excessive force can the public tolerate? Often members of the public do not enter complaints against the police. Courage to do so and the time and money that it takes to achieve a just outcome is just too much.

How democratic is our society? How much power do political parties have in the determination of who should lead our country? Too much, I say but that is part of the political system within which we live. How much change has taken place to resolve the problems of the poor in our society? It is far easier for the Prime Minister to throw money in the direction of the military to foster the interests of peoples in far off lands. This is not to say that our military should not be well equipped but it is a question of how our military forces are used. In this regard, too much power resided with the Prime Minister!

I will be examining policies relating to our military and writing about my feelings and understandings. Policies relating to other federal government departments and agencies will also be examined. The National Capital Commission is high on the list of agencies that need to be reviewed and comments will be voiced on what is viewed as not in the best interest of the public.

The actions and activities of the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in regards to Native Peoples (the First Peoples) deserve some attention.

Now, in all of this, I am not so naïve to believe that changes might come about reflecting what I believe to be necessary. My peace of mind is central to all that I do. I will be pleased to express my feelings, my thoughts and ideas. That is part of life; a simple life which reflects passing time from day to day and as time passes, those hours seem to pass more quickly than ever before. And that is part of nature and to be accepted!

Open letter to the Prime Minister of Canada

My dear Prime Minister,

I wonder how much you are aware of the fact that Mohawk sovereignty is being threatened by the continuing actions of the federal government and most importantly, the health and safety of all the residents of Akwesasne, Kahnawake, Kanehsatake and Tyendinega, men, women, children, the infirm and the aged.

It would be most unfortunate if Canadians were to become involved in “open warfare” with Canadian military personnel. Is this possible? Most certainly! Can you imagine what it would be like if Canadians became terrorists in our Canada in retaliation for activities on the part of our federal government? If you can, you will take immediate action to prevent any actions on the part of the federal government that would generate hostile actions on the part of any who feel oppressed by governments at all levels in Canada.

You have clearly indicated that Canada will be in Afghanistan for the long haul. You have your reasons for making that type of statement in support of future government international affairs. What do you believe to be more important, external affairs or internal affairs?

Where do you as a person stand? If you want to be damned in the minds of the peoples of the world, you have the unique but unfortunate opportunity in the here and now. What do you choose to do?

URGENT CALL TO ACTION TO PREVENT MILITARY AND POLICE INCURSION ON MOHAWK TERRITORIESPlease forward this email to your networks. If your group has a website, we would be grateful if you posted this call.March 2006The Coalition in Support of Indigenous Sovereignty – Native Caucus is asking that you take some time to phone, email or fax the authorities below to register your objection to a potential incursion onto Mohawk Territories this spring and at any other time. This request comes as a result of warnings by community leaders in Akwesasne, Kahnawake, Kanehsatake and Tyendinega who are preparing for a joint Canadian Forces/RCMP raid on April 1, the latest in a series of actions designed to destroy the Mohawk tobacco trade.Our position on this issue is as follows:In 1876 the Indian Act imposed the band council system of government on the indigenous people of Turtle Island (North America). Among other things, this law: Deposed already existing leadership to establish band councils and the areas over which they had jurisdiction. The Indian Act was passed without consultation with any indigenous leader, usurped the treaty process (nation to nation agreements) and made First Nations governments null and void, despite the fact that these governments had served our ancestors for millennia before Europeans arrived on Turtle Island. This is akin to the US government passing a law that disbanded the current Canadian government, determined what type of government Canada must have and designated the limitations of its power. Made First Nations Communities economically dependent on Ottawa. The federal government controls the only sources of revenue for social programs, economic development projects or job creation in FN communities. Ottawa determines through a variety of legal and financing mechanisms what band councils can and cannot do for their communities. Even the process of pursuing a land claim is legislated by Ottawa, funded (or not) by Ottawa and decided ultimately in Canadian courts. Land usage on FN territories is determined by Ottawa. There are many examples in history when the federal government leased or sold First Nations lands or resources and consequently reaped huge profits that did not accrue to the community. Clearly, the poverty that exists in First Nations communities is, and always has been, by Ottawa's design. Blatantly discriminated against women by recognizing Native descent through the male line so that First Nations citizenship rights for women were recognized only through their father's lineage and husband's status, and by prohibiting them from voting or running for office in band elections. This was a complete contradiction to traditional First Nations practices, in which descent for many communities was reckoned along the female line, and where women had significant authorities in political, economic and social life. While there were many nations and many practices, it is safe to generalize and say that women held positions of leadership directly and/or appointed male leaders and held them accountable. This was completely overturned by the Indian Act. Although women now have the right to vote and run for band office, almost a century of being excluded from political, economic and social decision-making has left First Nations women on and off reserve in very vulnerable situations. Women are among the poorest in First Nations communities. They have been targeted through various amendments to the Indian Act and thousands were stripped of their status along with their homes, benefits and any treaty rights they may have had. The hundreds of women who are missing from our communities, dead and murdered, is a direct result of a deliberate and calculated attack on the rights and authorities of First Nations women by the Canadian government.Determined who could call themselves an "Indian" and live in First Nations communities. The Indian Act established an Indian registry and with subsequent amendments there has emerged a complex set of legal categories (status & non-status Indians, Treaty Indians, Bill C-31 Indians, etc.) designed to divide and disempower First Nations families and communities. Non-status Indians are those who are not recognized by Ottawa as First Nations. They cannot live in their communities, do not enjoy benefits or treaty rights and are not permitted to participate in band council elections. Again, this is akin to the US determining who could be a Canadian and who could not, as well as who could live here and vote in Canadian elections. Initially through the use of Indian agents with sweeping powers and more recently through purse strings, Ottawa has controlled band councils, band chiefs and the Assembly of First Nations. Whether this current control is perceived of as friendly or hostile is irrelevant and sidesteps the basic assumption that First Nations people are children who cannot manage their own affairs. To recognize that some band councils, their chiefs and police are sincerely interested in serving their communities while others are corrupt may be true but fails to recognize that the band council system is itself inherently corrupt, paternalistic and racist. The Indian Act was and is an instrument of genocide. Likewise, the system of reserves, band councils and taxes are all tools of genocide. At best, the levying of taxes by Canada or the provinces on commercial activities within and among First Nations communities is an infringement of sovereignty as well as a violation of the treaties that exist, not to mention the inherent rights of First Nations people. This is particularly objectionable when the levying of taxes applies to transactions involving tobacco. It was First Nations people who developed, cultivated and cared for tobacco plants. Our ancestors were the first to understand and benefit from the use of tobacco in ceremony (even in times when our ceremonies were illegal). Canada now assumes it has a right to control the tobacco trade, which is consistent with its assumption that it has a right to control the lives of First Nations people. Now that tobacco is being used to generate income and sustain First Nations-owned businesses (an anti-genocidal activity), Ottawa wants to step in and crush the initiative.We reject the portrayal of Mohawk communities as divided between the minions of organized crime and law-abiding citizens. Mainstream media and Canadian authorities would have us believe that thugs are defying legally elected First Nations governments and Canadian laws. Such an analysis does not acknowledge the impact of a band council system, imposed, funded and controlled by Ottawa. It does nothing to educate us on the long history of genocide that remains official policy in this country. It does not examine Ottawa's historic role in sabotaging activities that contribute to the economic independence of First Nations people.On these grounds we are asking that you and your organization fax or email the officials below and voice your concerns regarding a potential violation of Mohawk sovereignty, which would follow a systemic pattern of violations over the years. Franti, musician and film producer...

While reading the Ottawa XPress of March 16, I came across an article written by John Akpata about the musician Michael Franti. I agree with Akpata’s comment that Franti “stands head and shoulders above the crowd” when it comes to political activism; he also does because he is one tall dude. He also stands above us with his music, using his acoustic guitar and singing. He is an entertainer who gets the crowd up and dancing which was much in evidence at his performance of Thursday night in Ottawa. The audience participated and became involved in the action. The environment was “electrified” and all no doubt felt so much better for attending.

Franti also presented a documentary “I Know I ‘m Not Alone” which he directed and produced. He incurred some debt in making this documentary and the monies gained from his performances will go some way to his financial recovery. That is good to know for he went out on a limb to produce the film but in the process learned some difficult lessons which will help in his next film productions.

If this film had been directed and produced by any graduate of a film studies program from one of our Canadian colleges or universities it would have been done with less expense in time and money. There is a “science” to film making yet much can be learned from the “practice” and Franti has served a brief apprenticeship, learning “on the job” and using his skills as a musician to produce a documentary that is supported and made more interesting because of the songs, background music and sound effects.
I would love to read a book written by Franti about his life experiences that would include his visits to foreign countries and something of his philosophy of life. Franti is a good man, a talented musician; we will be hearing more from him in the future and profiting from those experiences.

Who 's in charge? Who do we salute?

On March 7 the big guns of the military met with External Affairs officials in Gatineau, Quebec. What subjects were discussed? After the outspoken General Hillier said that Canada would be spending another ten years in Afghanistan, there can be little doubt that the Minister of External Affairs, under the direction of the Prime Minister, would clearly indicate that all matters concerning Canada’s involvement in foreign affairs would be determined within External Affairs and that nobody within the Department of National Defence should ever voice future government policies and above all else to structure the governments position on military affairs before the public. The role of DND should be determined by elected politicians who represent the people of Canada. Senior officials within DND are there to advise the government on military affairs and once given the go-ahead should act with their military expertise.

Is there an expression about the “tail should never wag the dog”; is this not what we are now seeing?

General Hillier is probably the best person to fill his present position as Chief of the General Staff. His training and experience have been top-notch and his time spent with the American military has provided him with an excellent understanding of the American position and how to interpret the role that might be expected of the Canadian military working in conjunction with the American forces.

Is it possible that the American “dog” is causing a Canadian tail to wag? How much influence should the Americans have over Canadian affairs?

Governments should represent the people...

We are controlled by big business and industry and by our governments who support those organizations. We are so slow to react to the harms that come to our people from pollution of our environment be it our air or water. The resulting deaths and physical and mental maladies tend to be either hidden or downplayed.

As an example, how well has the government protected the people from drugs that have had side effects that were harmful to patients and sometimes to children born to mothers who were treated using particular drugs? What has been done to eliminate from the air those pollutants that have harmed men, women and children?

It is so easy for governments to institute commissions and studies that would cause the people to believe that something was being done. The resulting reports that provide directions for change are not always adopted and often those reports are filed or placed on shelves for use by scholars for historical studies.

If we look at any recent studies or criticism of our educational or training systems, we can find that the same territory had been explored in the past with recommendations that are quite familar. If we look at our medical and health studies of the past ten years, can we identify changes that have taken place, and if yes, we still find ourselves with ongoing problems with our health systems. Where are our governments? We hear so much at election times but after the election all settles back to where we were before.

Governments should represent the people and should react in positive ways to improve the lot of all citizens.

Guns on our streets...

There can be little doubt that getting guns off the streets is a most positive approach to reducing particular types of crime. Lets us therefore express out appreciation to those leaders who were instrumental in bringing forth the program in Ottawa and let us hope that other communities will follow this example. Yet, I wonder what took those leaders so long to adopt this additional approach to crime prevention.
Now the more difficult job is to get guns away from the criminal element and from those who have illegal weapons in their possession. Governments can develop programs to do this. If we place a high value on lives of innocent civilian, rich rewards should be made available to individuals who supply information that results in getting those illegal guns off the streets and which also lead to the prosecution of those individuals who are in violation of our laws. Action is required, why not now?

Democracy play by Murrell

It was with a measure of pleasure that I read both the article by Matthew Harrison and the comment by Steve Landry in the Ottawa XPress ( http://www.ottawaxpress.ca )regarding the play Democracy written by John Murrell. I was inspired by both to attend a performance of the play but time has almost run out and other obligations now prevent me from attending.

Most Canadians learned something about the American Civil War from the movies like the great 1939 Oscar winning Gone With the Wind starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. I had the “misfortune” of having to study American history while attending high school in the United States and later as a more mature person, the great good fortune to have studied American history at university where I became enthralled with the study of American history and in particular, the Civil War. To have listened to the words written by John Murrell and voiced through the personalities of Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emmerson, as these gentlemen might have met during the American Civil War, would have been a delight. Now, I am left with the opportunity to read the play.

Although the play Democracy was written in 1990 and awarded two prizes in 1992, John Murrell was awarded many other prizes and honours for his work in the theatre including a $50,000 prize, awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts in 2002. This was the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts. It recognized John Murrell’s “highest level of artistic excellence and distinguished career achievement.“

Today, I read a column under Shotgun in the Ottawa XPress newspaper, (http://ottawaxpress.ca), written by Sylvie Hill, to which I wrote the following comment:

Sex, as the world turns…

There can be little doubt that the Catholic clergy around the world is sexually active. This is natural and understandable. From times immemorial there has been much admiration for the celibate Catholic clergy. How difficult must it have been for many priests to remain celibate? This celibacy regimen has been the root cause of some religious personnel to wander. Without confession and repentance, death would lead to eternal damnation and hell fire for these people. Yet, risks were taken and some caused problems for those with whom they had relationships and affairs. In Europe there are stories told of women relating that hell is filled with fallen priests. Who better to tell such stories as those who should know? As well, children who lived in residential schools and orphanages were subject to religious personnel who took advantage of those in their care. Stories continue to come out about the lives that have been harmed by those who took vows of chastity. There are many Catholics and many others who wish that the clergy could marry. It is believed that a better service could be provided by those who are full members of society, who have a better understanding of family life and sexual relationships between individuals. Will the Church ever become modern, up-to-date and understanding of how human beings interact? Will the Church ever reform? There is a need for another reformation where women will be able to lead the Church at the highest levels. There is a need for women to take their places as priests, bishops cardinals and ultimately popes. Will this ever happen? There is hope!

Not to rush to judgement...

The Right Honourable has proven to be decisive in some of his earliest public actions. As well as might have been expected by some astute observers of the historical political scene in Canada, nothing should be more surprising of a leader who needs to take action to meet some political needs than to do so. There is no need to say, “Just watch me,” as a warning of things to come. He just does them. This is Canada where the prime minister is all powerful!

It was not too long ago that a prime minister set up a “special fund” to meet his needs to preserve Canada by heavy advertising of the Canada Fact in the Province of Quebec and which lead to some elements of corruption, all the while his eyes were closed, all the while he would be able to claim somewhat that he had taken the high road. Not for a moment do I believe that his hands were not involved, even indirectly while wearing gloves so that his fingerprints would not be identified. A smart man can play the role of a fool and play others in the final analysis as fools while playing with golf balls! We had a prime minister who diverted funds to “his own city” providing employment for many of his constituents and perhaps to a few personal friends there and elsewhere. To the victor we give the spoils. And if Stephen Harper were not to do the same, some of us would wonder why he did not even though we would not approve of such actions. More Canadians need to become realistic in the expectations that they lay on their leaders.

Stephen Harper in not dumb! He knows what he is doing even though one might wonder. He could go down in history as one of the greatest. Give him time and breathing space.
Now as to the writers in our rags, they must produce lines that can hold the reader. That is their jobs. For that they are paid. If they have overly high expectations they may not be realistic and may be very disappointed and this will be reflected in their words. How objective are they really being and is objectivity either expected or desired?

Most Canadians want results from their government in terms of good programs that move the country ahead socially; programs that do not take away the view that we are a moral and upright people who believe in fairness and justice. This PM may be able to do this. He may be fast on the draw; he may not be the brightest but if he has chosen some good advisors, he will be the better leader for it.

Give our PM time to think over his rash actions, give him time to seek the best possible advice; give him time in these early days to prove himself. It is much too early to condemn him for some of his earliest decisions. Give him the benefit of the doubt. The merits of his early actions may be revealed in time to have been wise. He may come in for high praise in the future. This should be our honest hope and not self-delusion.

Permit me with my patience to have hope for the future.

Now, after the election...

December and January were months of rest from writing blogs. Why?  I trust is was because I was hiding or running away from sharing my thoughts and ideas relating to Canadian society and the issues or news commentaries of the day. So much of the news from day to the related to Canadian politics and the anticipated election.

During the election campaign and shortly after, I did write a few articles, speeches, poetry and letters. One item was a comment on an article written in the Ottawa XPress concerning my view that the time devoted to the election campaign was far too long. With television and the radio, with magazines and newspapers, with rapid travel from place to place by air flights and on high speed roads highways and with many local meetings to address the issues, we do not have the same need for the time that was required in earlier days for the public to be exposed to political thought and issues of the day. The following is the article written on January 28.

What a waste of time...

Over fifty days spent telling the public what is needed to make our country better than it was during the many days that we were "governed" by parliamentarians, to my simple way of thinking was a waste of time. Most voting decisions were already made when the election was called. How many individuals really changed their minds and if they did, why? Because of promises? In all the days spent in power, the Liberals and other party members did not do all the things which during the campaign they promised. Who do they think we are? Stupid? Well, I guess we are and we get what we have voted for, another minority government, which will be followed by other governments and we will still have, for example, inadequate medical care, crime in our streets and the poor will remain with us. Need I say anything about taxes? The social problems that we have today we had last year and the year before and next year they will still be here. And, this is what we call democracy? Well yes, we vote and live with the results. What ever changes? We will have another election within a few years and a repetition of words after words, promises after promises and another fifty plus days of wasted time!

After the election, the following commentary was written on January 24.

The battle lost and won...

The Liberals are out, the Conservatives in, and to the winner, the spoils. In Canadian politics and government, we find that the Prime Minister is one of the most powerful "rulers" imaginable. He makes appointments to the Senate, the Supreme Court, to Commissions of great variety and boards innumerable. He names members of his cabinet who meet in secret and pledge allegiance to their master and if they do not support him, they can be simply replaced of demoted. Should the P.M. not wear a crown? Stephen Harper soon to become the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper may show the world what honesty and integrity in government really means. The Canadian public has spoken (or voted) and the Conservatives have won. Now, what does the future hold?

Yesterday, the Right Honourable had his cabinet sworn in. There were a few surprises and some expressed concerns about a couple of appointments for they seemed to run contrary to what some may have supposed should have been the case. All too often the public or media personalities have expectations based on what has been spoken or written by members of the ruling party, as if those words have been carved in stone or that what was spoken is a form of absolute promises without any changes of heart or a response to a need as determined by the prime minister. Canadians should become realistic. The party in political power needs to “rule” and the blueprints and the tools used are those deemed to be the right ones. I say, let the party in power “rule” and let criticisms be made after programs are in place or decisions made which can be addressed in Parliament. The public need not second guess the prime minister on everything that he does. He needs breathing space and the time to get on with governing. His job and that of the Conservative Party is great. Canadians need to give the government the opportunity to get underway.

Election 2006

The gloves are on and they are into the ring. All parties are coming out swinging but not all with the same energy at present. The Bloc leader, Gilles Duceppe, will have the easiest time for the provincial party under Andre Boisclair has provided a strong force of support and the Liberal party in the provincial government , in the minds of the people is not faring too well. The Liberal leader, Paul Martin is all bluster. His promises will be in areas that his party has not come through with in the past. Many years to heal the program sicknesses of the past and now we will see the promises for the “right medicine”. Are promises simply “lies” in disguise? Stephen Harper’s words may cause him to lose his possible minority government election. One slip and he will be sucker punched out! Jack Layton’s NDP party is the party of opportunity for the Liberals for it will bring about the splitting of votes that could generate another Liberal party minority government. If the NDP party did not exist, the Conservatives would have an easy ride into power.

Might it be possible for the Bloc and the Conservative parties to get into a “coalition bed of convenience”; this, to prevent the Liberals from gaining another minority government of absolute power? There are those who firmly believe that Quebec will separate. Would it not be wonderful to see the transition accomplished by and through a coalition party of the “right”? If the idea could be advanced that Quebec will separate and that this should be achieved through positive and peaceful arrangements, the road and trip could be made more comfortable.

Let Canadians accept the inevitable separation with a positive attitude that will result in peace and harmony. The separation could be of benefit for all Canadians. The original “marriage” was not conceived in heaven and the “separation or divorce” will not find itself in hell.

And such is the stuff of dreams!

And here we go again

And here we go again into a period of accusations, of defense, of promises from the people who want to be the representatives of the people in seats designated for those who govern. What a laugh. Who governs? The party in power, headed by a most powerful individual who surrounds himself with those who may have talent but whose input into policy and programs is at his discretion. The power to appoint individual to positions of control and influence, to boards, to courts, to commissions, to public corporations, to positions on the international front, to the provision of funds to special projects and the list can go on. The Prime Minister of Canada has too much power; the position goes to an individual who has been selected as party leader by members of the particular party, nominated then elected. Is the Prime Minister truly the key individual in the country who should rule? In a minority government, he does not represent the majority of the people.

The Prime Minister may not really “represent” the electors who may have voted for the party because of the local candidate who is trusted to work on their behalf. Electors do not vote for the prime minister directly. The elected individual may sit as a back bencher who must toe the party line. Often, we see that the actions of individuals reflect self-interest, even those that might appear as altruistic. How many sitting members of parliament have refused to go on junkets to foreign lands, to study other governments or organizations? The learning and information gained on these trips could most often be gained by reading or listening to some local, knowledgeable person, saving both time for the individual and travel expenses for the government..

It is most unfortunate that honest individuals who want to do good, to do the right thing for the people they represent, find themselves without the power to bring about changes that would be most appropriate but find that the party decides or should I say the prime minister and his cabinet decide what is good for the nation and what is good for the nation is usually good for the elite and wealthy people of the country.

We find the prime minister telling the nation of all the good things that his party will do in the future, the very party that having had the opportunity to do all those “good things”, failed to do so. So much for promises, so much for missed opportunities and here we go again!

Later this morning, the prime minister will go to Rideau Hall, the residence and office of the Governor General, where a ceremony will take place to dissolve parliament and to set the date for the election of the next parliament.

There will be much electioneering over the next two months. I believe that most Canadians already know how they will vote but they will not disclose their inner-most political feelings to others. Candidates will work hard to persuade voters to support them as individuals and the party they represent. As an example there are some lukewarm Liberals who will not speak out against their party but will vote for another party out of a dislike of disgust with the behaviour of party members who have been identified in the Gomery Commission report as having done things that were neither appropriate nor just.

I wonder if I will waste time following the election campaign, listening to the speeches of the candidates and in particular those of the party leaders. There are some Canadians who may not even vote. We often hear individuals say that one party is as bad as another. They then ask, why vote? Because of the number of political parties, we could easily see another minority government, as we have seen many times in the past.

Yes, it will be a waste of time to follow the campaign to any great depth. Yet, I shall do so and there should be little doubt that I will be most discriminating in my selection of events to follow.

America the beautiful

America the beautiful, the just, the democratic; are these just words? Is America a just society? Good question, how would Americans respond?

The United States is a beautiful country and the people in general are beautiful people. Most of my American friends are wonderful people; those not wonderful are simply good. But what I see of America comes from what I read, what I see on the television and of course what I see and hear while visiting that great democracy? Did I say great democracy? Should I have said that? Perhaps it is at this point that I must confess that America is a democracy as far as the concept goes but as a functioning democracy, that is the big question. I leave the response to Americans to fathom, if they can and admit what conclusions they come forward with.

The United States is a country where citizens have the right to bear arms and they take this right most seriously. In many big cities the crime rate is higher that it would otherwise be, because of the guns that are in the hands of the criminal element.

The early colonists had a need for weapons; these were mainly used for hunting and security of family and community. Weapons were used during the major wars: the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Other minor wars have occurred on American soil, including the long existing “war” against the American Indian.

Are Americans a war-faring people? I do not believe so. When duty calls, Americans respond to defend the rights of people and democracy around the world. One should not find fault with this. It begs the question of the call to duty. The President as Commander in Chief has an impossible task when it comes to the decision to call the people to engage in a war. He depends on the advice of many. What is being called into question today relates to the quality of information and advice that he received prior to the present engagements in foreign lands.

Home Land Security is another activity that bears questioning. I viewed some major changes in the openness of American society. Perhaps not a good example but Washington has changed over the past four years. The military presence, the secret service presence and of other security personnel and of the number of police officials as well as the number of closed streets and access roads within the Capital leaves me at a loss for words but all of this is no doubt necessary for the terrorist have put so much pressure on the authorities that there is no other choice. Might one say that the terrorist have already won the first round of a rather silent war within the territory of the United States?

Can one imagine not being able to take a photograph of the Pentagon? Any and all enemies of the United States have more information on the Pentagon than any law abiding citizen could ever obtain from a simple photograph of the massive structure that holds many secrets relating to national security. What does this prove but that the government is filled with fear? The home of the brave, I doubt that very much. America is becoming fearful of its own shadow. What a shame for a nation that had strength of character to be lost through fear!

America, the home of the brave and the land of the free, if at all brave, how free? America is filled with fear and is willing to pay big dollars to reduce that fear. America will continue to pay and how pleased are the enemies of America and of the American society and way of life. America is a hated nation around the world. This is most unfortunate. Perhaps the sins of a few capitalist are now reaping a reward for all good American people. I am with the good American people, in spirit.

May all Americans have a Happy Thanksgiving. Best wishes for safe driving to those who must be on the road.

Good cops and bad cops

I am reminded of the words of a man on the street who said something like "the police sometimes act as judge, jury and executioner", to which I believe that some members of the public would agree. Examples coming from many of our larger cities would perhaps support those words. Let it be said, as well, that modern technology is working against the police as cameras have picked up improper and illegal police activities in the U.S. and in Canada, producing evidence against the police. Without that type of evidence, the police have been getting away with "murder", so the saying goes. Police brutality has been a way of life and action on the part of police authorities around the world for far too long. This brutality must stop. All those responsible for police activities need to acknowledge this most serious of problems and do whatever is necessary to bring about the positive and appropriate changes in police behaviour.

We need good police work, we need the safety and security that can be provided by a professional, competent, honest and humane police force. As I have indicated many times we need the Police Service and the Police Service needs (or could use) a positive citizenry. Trust does not come with wearing the "blue", it must come through a frank and open discussion of the malady that is within the ranks of the police communities around the world and senior administration making the necessary and appropriate changes. My world is here in Ottawa; this is where I expect the best police services to exist.

The $64,000 question to all $65,000 police constables or at whatever salary level and of all officers: “How trustworthy are you?” And to the public, a penny for your thoughts; do you trust police officers, do you fear the police based on what you have seen on TV news programs or have read in publications?

Is there rot at the core of police services? I would hope not! Are there a few "bad apples" wearing the "blue"? My feeling is yes! History certainly has something to tell us about that. There was once a question asked of a police polygraph being administered to all police officers on a voluntary basis, with the question: “Have you been personally involved in any criminal activity over the past two years?” How many would step forward?

Let the Ottawa Police Service become the model for all police services in Canada, North America and around the world. That could be an obligation to which I believe all superior officers, the Police Services Board and our elected officials would agree.

Let us stand together, building well constructed "bridges" for our children and their children into a world of safety and security of person and property. We can do it!

White phosphorous in Falloojeh

The Pentagon spokesman recently said:

"It's part of our conventional-weapons inventory and we use it like we use any other conventional weapon,"

This war has redefined ‘conventional’. It has taken atrocity to another level. Everything we learned before has become obsolete. ‘Conventional’ has become synonymous with horrifying. Conventional weapons are those that eat away the skin in a white blaze; conventional interrogation methods are like those practiced in Abu Ghraib and other occupation prisons…

Quite simply… conventional terror.

The above words came from a blog written in Baghdad early this morning. The name of the blog is Baghdad Burning.

Many Americans will remember the war in Vietnam where napalm was used with horrifying results on the civilian population.

Many Americans and other members of the Allies will remember the bombings that took place in Europe as well as the bombings by planes and rockets on England. We were all involved. And of course we had the atomic bomb incidents in Japan. All of these events were undertaken to bring about an early end to the Second World War, to bring peace to the world.

The use of white phosphorous in Iraq can’t be justified and should not be tolerated. The American people are being disgraced by those responsible for the military, from the President to members directing the war from the Pentagon.

Now, we are all involved in a war either directly or indirectly. Canada did not join the United States and England in the invasion of Iraq but the country has been affected by the war. Canada is affected by most everything that happens in the United States of America. If the U.S. sneezes, Canadians catch the cold! Sleeping next to an elephant can be dangerous for a mouse!

Canadians are spending heavily for security and all the while our liberties are being curtailed. Under the name of secrecy, some of our rights are being abused. For the sake of humanity, the United States should terminate its involvement in Iraq.

We learned yesterday that security at airports that handle freight at times in non-existent. An explosive device could be placed in the cargo and if activated, the aircraft with all aboard would be lost. Yet, security at border crossing points where Canadians enter the United States is very tight. There is a lack of security for air travel where cargo is not subjected to adequate inspection to protect the air traveler at the same time, there could be too much for land travel between Canada and the United States leading the American public to believe that their interests are well protected; this is a false sense of security!

I have come to the conclusion that the terrorist have America under control. The terrorist have the power and have caused Americans to fear for their lives. Americans have no choice but to pay high taxes to increase the security that is expected. There is no doubt that the terrorist can strike most any target using whatever weapons that they choose.

The security industry is large and flourishing. It provides employment to many and that helps the American economy. The weapons industry is large and flourishing and that helps the American economy. The military industry is alive, well and large and that provides employment to many and that helps the American economy.

One point of view that has been expressed is that the economy of the United States is now dependent upon the war and the security industry; both of these have flourished at great cost to the American people. When we look at the United States, we Canadians know that the American economy did quite well during the early years of both World Wars producing instruments and munitions during which time Canadians were fighting the wars in Europe. Nevertheless, the world was grateful for the American entry into both wars for without the American assistance, those wars would have been lost and the democratic philosophy and way of life would not exist today.

A grey day, a great day!

Yes, it is a grey day, rather wet yet warm this morning. Heavy winds are coming from the west. The windy cities of Chicago and Winnipeg will be having heavy wind warnings or, as they say, advisories. For Ottawa, rain has been predicted with a low of -8 for tomorrow night. That spells some snow and icy road conditions. The first few days of winter weather bring more than the usual number of accidents as drivers go through a period of adjustment to the new and hazardous driving conditions.

A great day for Andre Boisclair for he won his party’s leadership position, last night on the first ballot! The convention ended with a strong message for party unity with the runner-up, Pauline Marois, promising support to the new leader. When the party captures the provincial legislature, she will no doubt be given a very high position within cabinet and the appropriate portfolio. The road to that success will require consistent and quality work on the part of all supporters with the ultimate result, the separation of Quebec from Canada. Andre Boisclair will lead the way! Vive le Quebec libre!

It has been announced that the great and wonderful singer Shania Twain will be inducted into the elite group of members of the Order of Canada. She has made it from “rags to riches” with many honours on her way to music and social success. Canadians love her, Americans love her and the world should as well! Might Shania Twain become a future Governor General? Why not?

Boisclair elected

The telephone voting system used to determine who would be the new leader of the Parti Quebecois has been successful resulting in the election of Andre Boisclair.

Quebec politics will never be the same is now a truer statement if ever such were possible. Before the next provincial election we will have a federal election probably early in the January.

Federal politicians will be very busy while most Canadians will be observers of the political scene while still being able to do their Christmas shopping and all things associated with a happy holiday season.

I don't expect the Liberals at the federal level or at the provincial level in Quebec to do well. Then, and then? A referendum!

Watch for the breakup of Canada as we know it today; with the result that Quebec will be a new nation in North America with every opportunity to go it alone and to become most successful in many areas of international relations.

Vive le Quebec Libre!

Walking in the woods

I love the autumn days that are bright and sunny, cool yet warm enough not to have to wear heavy clothing. Gone are the hot days of summer that can make walking less than enjoyable for those of us who depend on walking as our major activity for exercise and subsequently, good health.

Memories of my days as a youngster flow with a glorious flourish of colours of the fallen leaves in their golds, browns, reds, mixed with multi-colours almost indescribable. The aromas of the forest and the fresh air that fills one's lungs provide the sensation of a completeness with nature and reduces one to a state of ecstasy. One of my great delights is to kick the leaves as I make my way along the trails that are covered by the leaves and at times, carpeted with the needles from the pine trees.

Soon those trails will be covered by snow. The quiet of the forest, when the howling of the winds subside can be only be broken as the snow is crunched under foot. I am always amazed at the number of tracks left by the deer as they cross my pathways through the forest. It is nice to think that we share the natural environment with many animals and to witness their movements by the trails that they leave on the freshly fallen snow.

Isn't life wonderful?

Andre Boisclair and Canada

The Partie Quebecois will be holding a leadership conference on Tuesday. I predict that Andre Boisclair will be the winner.

In the next provincial election the P.Q. will win and this will followed by a referendum. That referendum will lead the way to the formation of a new nation in North America.

Andre Boisclair was once the youngest member of the Quebec legislature. Later he became a cabinet minister. Today, he possess those characteristics that will lead Quebec into a wonderful future as an independent nation.

And Canada, what will it do without Quebec? It will more that survive. It will thrive and develop stronger ties with the United States.

The day may come when the remaining provinces will separate. British Columbia to become a powerful maritime country, Alberta will stand alone and Saskatchewan and Manitoba will join together. What about the New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island? They will come together, leaving Newfoundland & Labrador to remain as another nation. In summary, from ten provinces we will end up as seven independent nations. If perchance Newfoundland & Labrador remain with the other Atlantic Provinces to form a nation, its name might even become "New Canada".

What does the future for Canada? Will it become one united nation after Quebec's separation or through further separations, a number of independent nations? I predict that after a number of "separations", Canada will no longer exist but the independent nations will survive and do quite well on an international basis.

An Ottawa Week

The release of the Gomery Report also known as the Quebec Sponsorship scandal provided more TV time and newspaper space than any single topic in many years. It may even lead to an election before the end of the year.

The big winner falling from the report was the present Prime Minister, Paul Martin, as he was exonerated in the matter of the scandal. The big loser was the former Prime Minister Jean Chretien who should have been aware of what was taking place in a program that he advanced. Was the program ever justified as appropriate to bring the Federal Government before the people of Quebec? Whoever dreamed up the program along with the now deflated street fighter, “da little guy from Shawinigan” will go down in history as down-right foolish. Were the antics of Jean Chretien simply “small town cheap”?

We heard that Chretien will apply to the Federal Court to review the finding of the Gomery Commission, in the hope that he might come away smelling sweeter. It was even said that he would pay for the legal costs. Wonderful!

By the end of the week one poll showed the Conservative Party leading in an election if it were held today. It also showed that the majority of Canadians believe that the Prime Minister who was Minister of Finance during the scandal period must be held accountable. So it goes in politics. One can’t always win in politics or life, even when one does the right thing or is innocent of some improper action or activity. If you are a member of the opposing force or group, you just “take your lumps”. Even Justice John Gomery has been criticized for some of his comments for which he did apologize. Yet, the vast majority of Canadians who viewed any of the sessions of the Commission’s hearing would believe that Mr. Justice Gomery to be an able and honourable gentleman. He was certainly thought to have been so before his appointment. His report is a reflection of all that he heard; his conclusions are the result of his analysis and integration of the data and information provided by the many witnesses who made presentations and were questioned on their activities.

During the week the Prime Minister attended the Summit of the Americas held at Mar del Plata in Argentina. Although he extolled the benefits of free trade, Canada was still faced with its problems with the United States on a softwood lumber dispute. Some South Americans view the United States as an imperialist world power and demonstrated in a violent confrontation with the police.

France has been involved in a number of violent confrontations with youth across the country. These young people are mostly unemployed black North Africans who have not been integrated into French society. The French government needs to address the problems generated by its open border immigration policy which conforms to an agreement of all the countries in the European Block. We in Canada may face similar situations but we do not have the same concentration of youth and therefore it may not be likely but the problems of integrating new Canadians into Canadian society remain.

There are many problems relating to Native reservations in Canada. This past week was highlighted by a water advisory requiring water to be boiled, on the Kashechewan Reserve in Northern Ontario. This type of situation exists in a number of communities in Ontario and the government needs to do all that is possible to avert another “Walkerton” situation. As to the federal government, the ministry responsible for aboriginal affairs needs to analyze all situations under its jurisdiction. What is not called for is the throwing of many millions of federal dollars at the problems that exist.

White and Black Hats

The hats they wear do not distinguish between the good and the bad. The vast majority of police officials are good; they do what is right and that which is expected of them. Yet, we hear periodic complaints, some justified but most resulting from the public expecting more than what is humanly or financially possible. As to the “bad cops”, they do exist and that may be a reflection of human nature, of greed and self-interest. These officers need to be rooted out and replaced.

It is unfortunate that the TV news programs often devote much time to stories of police in conflict situations where violence and abuse is most evident. Infrequently we see police using tactics which are inhuman, cruel, and brutal and totally beyond the behaviour expected of the police authorities. The general public abhors what is seen and feels a deep sense of disgust.

What is most hurtful is the display of racial intolerance, discrimination and abuse that sometimes takes place. Brutality is the word that is heard. It is a word that should never be associated with police conduct and behaviour.
The public has a right to expect the protection of the police against the small percentage of the people who exhibit antisocial behaviours. The laws are there and the police are expected to uphold those laws.

Whenever a violation of the trust that is placed upon police officers occurs, all police officers lose a measure of respect. This can be most unfortunate for trust and respect is at the cornerstone of the structure that supports the system designed for the security and safety of our society.

The public needs and should support the police in the many and difficult tasks in which they are involved. They should be honoured and thanked for without them our society would become chaotic and lead to anarchy and the destruction of the very thing that identifies us as human.

Forest Trails

Memories of my youth are strong as I walk through the woods, kicking the leaves, marveling at their many colours and the smells of the autumn air. Soon the paths and trails where I walk will be covered by snow but nature will continue on the cycles of life in which we all share. The cyclists who use the forested trails will be replaced by cross-country ski enthusiasts and the walkers will continue in their desire to be a part of nature, renewing their lives of health and happiness. Even under the harshest of weather conditions we find walkers on those trails.

It has been said by many in the past that we here in Nepean can enjoy the more than 36 km of trails of the Stony Swamp Conservation Area, most of which have year-round parking for those who do not have close access to the trails. Many of the trails have picnic areas, and toilets.

Nature studies by students and others can be a joy as observations of the many animals, birds and reptiles can be made. When last did you see a beaver or a snapping turtle? When last did you enjoy the fresh air and beauty of our forested areas? Though deer in our area are plentiful, it may come as a surprise to see one or more within a few feet of a trail, truly a photographer’s delight which is extended to so much wildlife.

"G" Day 2

Many words have been devoted to the Gomery Commissions report. Much TV time was also devoted bringing news of the conclusions to the public. As was predicted, Jean Chretien, of golf ball fame or infamy will seek to have a court review of the report because he feels that Mr. Justice Gomery was not just in his conclusions.
History has shown that Jean Chretien has been a street fighter and a liar in his youth. How devious he was as a politician has not been fully revealed.
In Lawrence Martin's CHRETIEN, we learn of Chretien's "capacity for deception". He understood the three monkeys, see no evil, hear no evil, tell no evil. He well knew, as it is well known that information in the public service is passed on without documentation, where no paper trail can be found. Can there be any doubt that a man who sets up a special fund would not be kept informed as to its progress and its success or lack thereof?
Chretien often spoke of his legacy to the people of Canada. His legacy will include the Quebec Sponsorship Scandal.What a shame!

A "G" Day

Today is a "G" day, a good day with the release of the long-awaited Gomery Commission report. Many Canadians will agree with the conclusions arrived at by Justice Gomery. Some few will disagree and some of those that have been implicated in wrongdoing might be expected to take some form of legal action, among these, the golf ball man, Jean Chretien and the former ambassador to Denmark, the infamous and disgraced Alfonso Gagliano who was recalled or should I say fired by the Prime Minister.
What remains to be seen is the reaction of the three major parties in the House of Commons. The New Democratic Party could have been instrumental in bringing down the Liberal government but decided to support the Liberals is certain concessions were made relating to particular programs that the NDP wanted to see go through. Chances are that the NDP will continue with that support.
As the Prime Minister has been exonerated, the country is not faced with having its highest citizen coming under a cloud of mistrust and suspicion.
Mr. Justice Gomery should be commended for coming through with his report on time. This report reflects his assessment of the information which was garnered during the hearings. He heard and saw what many Canadians heard and saw and there can be little doubt that his conclusions will deviate little from what an average Canadian would come forward with.

The Anticipated Report

The Gomery Commission has had to review thousands of pages of testimony and now will come forward with a report tomorrow relating to wrongdoings within the Government of Canada. Of concern to many Canadian taxpayers is how justice will be served. Questions have been raised as to what criminal charges will be levied, if any. Any individual watching the proceedings from day to day might well have come to conclusions as to who the culprits were. In their minds there has been an association of guilt with individuals. Now, the desire is to see if their conclusions as to who are the true culprits might be the same as those that will be identified within the Commission’s report.
I have said in the past that the former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien as the first minister is responsible for the actions of his ministers. A captain of a ship is responsible for his ship. If he passes responsibility on to another person on the ship, he still is fully responsible for what happens. Many captains in the past have gone down with their ships. Jean Chrétien should go down in infamy!

Trust and Politicians

A dictionary definition of trust might include a few of the following words: confidence in a person or thing because of the qualities one perceives or seems to perceive in the person or thing...acceptance of something as true or reliable without being able to verify it...a responsibility, charge or duty involving the confidence of others. While that might be considered a partial definition, it does serve to bring a measure of agreement to achieve an understanding of the trust that Canadians expect of politicians and the process of government.

The Gomery Commission will release its report in the near future.
What we will learn will in all likelihood diminish our respect for the political process, politicians and the public service. This is most unfortunate as many politicians are trustworthy and that holds very true for those members of the Canadian public service.

The prime minister in Canada has too much power. Power over his cabinet and power to make decisions that may not be in the best interest of the people of Canada. He often has a group surrounding him which provides advice but in addition he has many friends outside of the government who have great influence on him. As well, there are those who have provided him with assistance of many types and to them he owes what are called political favours. Many posts are filled with loyal members of his party and in politics sometimes reference is made to the pork barrel and feeding at the trough. We have heard of breaking the cycle of influence and we have heard of a new "ethics" entering into politics. Many words have been voiced but not sufficient action to bring a sense of credibility to the process.

Some former ministers of the crown have received political appointments to crown corporations and a few have become disappointments if not outright failures and liabilities as far as future elections are concerned.

Where does all of this leave us? Perhaps with a measure of lack of respect and a lack of trust. This may be most unfortunate but that is reality.

Ottawa, the centre of?

Yes, Ottawa is the centre of activities that bring the people of Canada face to face, at times, with the country's leaders. More often than not, it is through TV, where most Canadians spend much too much time. Yet, Canadians are more aware of what is happening around the world and are more sensitive to politics and geography than their friends south of the border.

Here in Ottawa we are close to what happens on Parliament Hill, in fact many Ottawans work directly for the federal government and those who don't, support all those activities on the Hill including all programs that require funding, using their federal tax dollars. Many public servants are too well aware of activities within government that are entirely inappropriate but have to put up with situations because it is know that whistle blowers can live difficult lives within the public service.

Today we hear that David Dingwall was on the hotseat for his spending habits while he was President of the Royal Canadian Mint. We also hear that former Cabinet Minister, Alphonso Gagliano, who was later ambassador to Norway, representing the people of Canada, brought some shame to Canada when he was recalled, in part for his share in activities that the Gomery Commission had been investigating for many months. That Commission's report will be released in the near future. He recently stated the present Prime Minister, Paul Martin and one of his Cabinet Ministers, Stéphane Dion, were fully aware of the $250-million advertising program, leading to speculation that there is something there to hide.

And now, we learn that one of the Prime Minister's friends, Richard Mahoney, failed to register as a lobbyist and perhaps did lobby after a "mix-up" within Industry Canada's Lobby Registration Branch. Let us presume that he is absolutely innocent of this "infraction" but the public must wonder about his activities as a lobbyist.

What should concern the people in Mahoney's riding, who voted for the much respected Ed Broadbent of the NDP to become their federal representative and who will be retiring from politics is the fact that Richard Mahoney will probably run again. If elected, he is a likely shoe-in for a cabinet appointment. He could win if the vote is split three-ways with the NDP and the Conservatives receiving well over 50% of the vote but the Liberals under Mahoney receiving the highest share of votes among the candidates, with the entitlement to a seat in Canada's Parliament. The NDP party has very little hope of leading the next government. It would be wonderful for the Conservatives if the NDP voters would support them, to bring about the downfall of the Liberals. Those voters could be the future "king-makers" of the Canadian Parliament.

Ottawa is the centre of scandals, intrigue, corruption of many sorts and no doubt the centre for the creation of national cynicism.

Time passes

Time passes and life moves on and though I have not written directly to my blog, I have been active on other literary fronts. As well, I have been involved in travel to the United States and reading many books, magazines and newspapers, following those activities with perhaps too much thinking.

I have written many words that have not been for publication or sharing with many but only with a few individuals.

I have found that so many activities and news events have taken up much of my otherwise "free" time. For example, the hurricanes in the U.S. have been a focus, in particular after receiving a first email from a friend who had left his home in New Orleans and was driving to his brother's home in Houston.

I have spent time in New Orleans and in other communities in Louisiana, Alabama and Texas visiting family, friends and former classmates. My thoughts have been with them and the many individuals who have been the victims of tragic events associated with the hurricanes.

Election fever

No election has been called. The House is still in session. Perhaps it is a simple virus that has been spreading over the last few weeks. The Conservative Party would love to have an election but to date has been concerned about the many Canadians who feel that it is simply too early. Parliament has not been sitting long enough to bring forth much legislation. Some Canadians are concerned about the costs associated with an election. But there is a group, composed mostly of Liberals, who would like to postpone the election indefinitely or at least until after the sponsorship scandal report from the Gomery Commission is released in December.

To date, so much negative publicity has come out of the inquiry into the scandal that the Liberals must feel an early election will produce their downfall. There is apparent corruption within the federal Liberal Party in the Province of Quebec. So many stories have come out of the inquiry to date that most Canadians feel rather disgusted with what has taken place.

These are sad days for all Canadians, no matter to which party they belong. History is being made and our children and their children will study about these shameful times as part of the history of this country for which, in the past, there has been so much pride.

What many Canadians find hard to believe is the magnitude of the scandal. How so many intelligent individuals could bring themselves to be involved in corrupt and possibly illegal activities stretches the imagination and credulity of the masses.

I have written about my belief that all those who were involved in illegal activities should go to jail. But don’t be surprised if some will go and, unlike the Monopoly Game, they have already passed “go” and have collected their “two hundred” and much, very much more.

I say that if the past prime minister is found to be directly implicated, he should be fined heavily and should be sent to prison for an extended “holiday”, without his golf balls. For exercise he should be assigned tasks such as cleaning out the toilets of the prison and should spend a good spell of time in solitary confinement. I would show no mercy. I believe that he is at the bottom of the scandal and if not, he should have been aware of the “success” of the sponsorship program and if he was not, he is guilty of not performing his duty as the CEO of all activities on the Hill. In any case, he is a loser!

The Chretien legacy to the Canadian people has been a travesty, a cruelty performed on our society. We Canadians should not feel guilty for what has taken place. Those guilty should pay a price, a very heavy price!

Election fever is in the air. There should be an election before autumn.

Sovereign Quebec

Quebec as a foreign country would be easy to accept. I am personally tired of all the talk of separation. All marriages are not perfect. When partners become disillusioned or are treated badly, we find that separation or divorce can be a positive outcome for both parties. Likewise in government, if separation of parts will produce happiness, then let it be!

I have lived in the province of Quebec. Part of my elementary and secondary education took place there. I speak French and have enjoyed the benefits of living and working with French Canadians. I have enjoyed participating in social and cultural activities and can see no reason whatsoever not to continue experiencing the pleasure of all such activities.

So, what would I have to lose? Very little, if anything; unless there will be some extra costs involved in getting into the new country or paying some higher taxation on the goods and services that I might acquire there.

I have come to the conclusion that I am in favour of Quebec’s separation. I encourage the separation. I would be willing to help in activities related to separation. If I choose once again to live there, I would not look upon such an activity as a step backwards but a positive step forwards.

I echo the words of Charles de Gaulle, the first president of the Fifth Republic of France. “Vive le Quebec libre!”

The Kingdom of Kana Dada

Once upon a time in a distant kingdom called Kana Dada there lived the most handsome King Petrus. All the young ladies of the court loved him.

King Petrus was very smart and he once said that if you wanted to get a job done give it to General Johannus.

General Johannus kept things under his control and could always deliver the goods.

Now kingship had to be earned and the people of the kingdom could select the person who was to be their next king.

General Johannus had a good chance to become king. He was hungry for that power.

He took care of his friends with rewards. The people from his birth village were also rewarded. They loved him.

He later became King Johannus! He used his power as he pleased.

King Johannus knew that to be selected a second and third time he would be required to continue having many friends and had to find new ways to reward them.

Now King Johannus never provided gift money from his limited personal treasury but he could have money moved from the kingdom’s treasury. He was never to be seen doing this but had others act for him. He gave the key to the treasury to one of his favourites, General Alfonsus. All the people who raided the treasury and the people who received special rewards were never to identify themselves or any others who were involved.

Later, it was learned that money had left the treasury illegally and the people of the kingdom were angry and wanted to know what had happened. They said there was much do-do in Kana Dada!

King Johannus left the power of the kingdom to one of his strongest generals, called Paulus. King Paulus had a major clean-up job to do.

The people, under the new King Paulus carried out a big inquisition that lasted many weeks. This inquisition was carried out under the leadership of the Grand Inquisitor, Justinius Gomerus, a most highly respected and honourable gentleman.

In the end, the finger pointed in the direction of the old King Johannus as he had held the key to the treasury.

Someone said the key was like a smoking gun.

The people remembered little Johannus Hornerus sitting in a corner and saying: "What a good boy am I." How times change!

Can we believe that the former King Johannus was guilty?

Semi-reverie

So often our dreams contain nonsense qualities about them. Yet, at times there are such true–to-life situations that upon awakening one would almost think that what was dreamed actually happened. The question is often asked how significant are dreams and what meanings can be transferred to one’s actual life. Many books have been written on those topics and I shall write about the significance of dreams at a later time.

For me, the most important or critical time for a dream state is between sleep and being fully awake. During those periods I can solve some of the minor problems of the world. It is a time period of great creative output. Material is covered for short stories, for poetry, for letters to the editors and for research into many areas of life experience.

I call the transition period of sleep to full awakening as semi-reverie. It is a state of existence that I can say I enjoy. I feel that I could conquer the world, or at least my very small world. I have powers beyond all measure or at least I can’t be hurt by any external force. It is a time of free-floating ideas that move on still waters. It is a time of comfort when both the body and mind are calm; when actual breathing can be enjoyed.

I am reminded of the highs that I would often experience when I ran long distances. During those times I would also experience the feeling of absolute harmony in breathing and blood flow; each breath was enjoyable as the air would be taken in then exhaled. Each running step was so smooth; the body propelled through the air, almost flying. What a safe way to fly, through the air yet so close to “terra firma” with man and space in an interesting balance. Almost a dream state; almost a state of semi- reverie; a state of existence to be enjoyed, not with a full understanding of what actually takes place but a condition to be experienced.

Semi-reverie is part of my life existence. Could I live without it? No!

Dreaming

Waking dreams and sleeping dreams
Are all the same to me.
They exist within my mind

Monogamy, bigamy and polygamy.

Most of us have a good understanding of monogamy and most couples are involved in monogamous relationships, even if some men have mistresses, have affairs or are living in common-law relationships. Monogamy, by definition, is the marriage to only one wife or husband at a time. This is a legal union of a couple, performed by a legal authority, be the authority civil or religious.

Bigamy is the illegal act of having two wives or husbands at the same time. Although I do not have the statistics on prosecutions for bigamy, I must believe it is very low. As divorces today are fairly easy to obtain, the practice of bigamy is thereby discouraged. As well, couples often live as common-law partners rather than entering into bigamous relationships.

Recently a man in western Canada declared that he was a polygamist. He had quite a number of wives and many children. This action was sanctioned under the religious principles of his faith. He believes that under the Canadian Charter of Rights, he has the legal authority to do have multiple wives.

The state probably agrees that the Charter would work to the benefit of the accused, therefore he has not been charged with a criminal offense. Polygamy remains a crime but if the state does not prosecute, it may encourage a few others to commit polygamy.

Now, where do I stand on this matter? I believe that the state should not intervene in the situation where the marriages take place by a person qualified to perform the marriages according to the principles of the couple’s religious faith.

I do not believe that many men and women would ever consider entering into polygamous relationships. It would prove to be rather expensive living. Furthermore, it would take some control and willpower to maintain peace and harmony in a single home if a number of married people were living together in polygamous relationships.

Taxation for education

All are not all born equal in terms of the financial ability to acquire an education. If it were not for public education supported by the state, some individuals would not be able to go to school. Pre-university education comes at no direct cost to the individual student but is covered by all property tax payers.

A question that is often asked relates to the cost effectiveness of the educational system. Most taxpayers would agree that the fixed costs for salaries of teachers must be covered. Salaries are negotiated by school boards composed of representatives of the taxpayers.
When it comes to the organization of the system and the costs related to its administration, additional questions come to mind.

One institution that conducts research into education in the Province of Ontario is the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. The big question now relates to what studies have been conducted within that institution to make the total system both efficient and effective. Then a question will be asked about the effectiveness of the Institute itself which may be incorporated in a future research study.

Could the Institute conduct a research study on itself?

I wonder why I so often look to that structure, sometimes piercing low hanging clouds, for answers to the questions that we have concerning our society. That structure is a tower; it is made of ivory. But ivory can’t be legally sold so it must be a figment of my imagination or the result of fables told.

The high priced help working in the academic offices of our nation warrant questioning. When and why were the rules made for the hiring, maintaining, firing or retiring these people?

Now, I can well understand lectures being given in hallowed halls of our universities. I can see many individuals sitting in large auditoria listening to the voice of great lecturers who provide ways of questioning and searching for knowledge and who provide the motivation that is sometimes required for students to think deeply, to read voraciously and then to commit to paper their thoughts, interpretations and ideas relating to particular areas of study.

What I find difficult to understand is how these professors spend their time. If we total the amount of time spent in the lecture hall we come quickly to the conclusion that it is a small fraction of the work-time of the professors. We also find that the academic year is short or the number of courses “taught” by the professors is not that great.

In many of those institutions, we find lecturers teaching introductory courses to large numbers of students; here we are not talking about 20 or 30 students but many more sometimes exceeding one hundred. Those lecturers do not receive a high income but they do generate many dollars coming from student tuition fees and this support the life style to which professors have grown accustomed. Between those lectures, sometimes excellent lectures, and the school libraries, students can forge ahead in their pursuit of knowledge and in the development of their critical questioning techniques.

I now question the across the board sabbatical, those seventh-year recuperation periods during which some research activity and writing can produce “new knowledge” or something that can be recognize as forward movement of the professor, in many ways unknown.

Then we hear of “publish or perish”, that demand of the system that tells the world or at least those within the same discipline that the professor is contributing to the field of study. How much publishing should be coming from those institutions and for what purposes?

My personal view is that we see little coming from the ivory towers to help resolve the many problems within our society. With their vast knowledge and understanding of the ways things happen and perhaps better ways for things to be done, little do we hear from those brilliant academic minds. This does not mean that there are not professors who are advancing knowledge and in practical ways are sharing what they know for the improvement of world conditions, often starting at the local level.

We are here to praise the positive contributions made to society coming from our academic institutions. At the same time I have many questions concerning an antiquated approach to what takes place within those institutions. These questions need to be asked to bring the world of learning as exemplified within those institutions into the twenty first century.

Difficult Times

One of my favourite films won an Academy Award for cinematography in 1965. The name of the film was “Ship of Fools.” On most any day we can now see, on television, the “House of Fools”. No, I am being unkind, I should say the “House of Foolishness” where our representatives to the Federal Parliament shout, pound desks, and make all sorts of sounds coupled with words to drown out the words and comments made by members on the “other side.” Where we expect civil debate, we find individuals wanting to gain political points. The issues become clouded and the public frequently turned off.

In the “House of Foolishness”, would anyone want to address the Canadian public? The Prime Minister did want to address the Canadian people but he chose to do so from his office. There he could feel much more comfortable; he would be able to feel at home.

This he did tonight. Seldom do prime ministers address the public directly from their offices. It is done when there is a crisis situation for the nation. Do we have a national crisis at the present time? No! Is the Liberal party in crisis mode? Yes!

The Gomery Commission revelations have been shocking and most disturbing. The prime minister would like to see an election called after Mr. Justice Gomery presents his report and recommendations in December. The parties in opposition might prefer a much earlier date. The Canadian public is ambivalent.

My personal preference would be for an election in October. Let us have a pleasant summer and after schools reopen and the cooler fall weather is with us, we would have the ideal time for an election.

In any case, we live in difficult times: in very difficult political times!

Native Leadership

There are more aboriginal people moving ahead in the pursuit of higher education.
This holds true for all peoples. But the need for educated Natives is becoming more apparent every day. Many have moved into positions of leadership within their own tribes, as chiefs and in the wider world of work.

Most of these leaders are intelligent people but once in awhile, for whatever reason, some statements that they make go too far. One might have personal beliefs but these should not be expressed if they are contrary to the law of the land. Being Native does not give one special powers. Perhaps on reservations power goes with the territory but the authority that goes with the holding a position must have respect for all peoples.

The press is everywhere. To the press, nothing is better than a “juicy story” for publication. Nothing is sacred. All and everything is fair game.

Now what I say about Native leaders would also pertain to other leaders in society, but in general, it is not wisdom that these other leaders possess in greater measure but they perhaps have learned how to keep out of trouble and to speak with much discretion.

Native leaders of the future will bring to their positions some important concepts and philosophy from non-Native society, learned while attending programs of higher education. They will be able to meld some elements of their Native cultures with those of others. Or, they will be able to distinguish between both and live with a deep respect for both. This will be the way to preserve that which is of great value from their cultures. If not, that which is truly Native will be submerged to the point that it becomes irrelevant and will be lost forever.

We must live with disappointments.

I had hoped for too much. Now I live with a disappointment.

In the final analysis, my disappointment may work out for the betterment of society, but that is a little difficult to believe. By the white smoke we learned that a new pope had been selected. Pope Benedict XVI, by all accounts is conservative, if not ultra-conservative.

My disappointment is simply that I believed that the day for women to become priests and priests to marry was at hand. Was that too much to ask for?

I must say that I was pleased that the new pope was not Italian. We have seen too many of those! Now we have had two non-Italians popes yet, European. It was time for a major change. But, that was not to be. Maybe next time we will see a Latino pope; one who might come from Latin America where half of all Catholis live.

Popes have too much power, their power is absolute. There are many Catholics in North America and Europe who would like the Church to change. Their hopes have been dashed. Perhaps the next pope will be more liberal and maybe, just maybe he will hear the voice of God saying: “It is time for the Church to become more moderate in its relationship with all members.”

Some day in the future Catholics will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about.

I have absorbed my disappointment and frustration for I recognize that times do change, and popes do come and go. The Church of Rome will change its attitudes and become more humanistic in its existence!

From Ottawa to Mecca

Bells Corners is a religious community or so it would seem if one were to count the number of churches representing different religious groups. One of the more recent arrivals is that of the Muslim community that has had a mosque, a small mosque by size of building but a mosque within which prayers of worship have been offered for the last 5 years.

It has been said that the Islamic faith is the fastest growing religion in the world. Across North America, from community to community we find mosques and associations of Muslim peoples. These people have come to Canada from many nations of our world. Yet, they hold a religious faith common to all regardless of language, culture or colour of members.

The fundamental ideals of Islam could be viewed as ideal for Canadian society, as human rights can bring religions together with a focus on the right to life and the freedom of religion. Other rights relating to family, property and justice are all included in Islamic ideals.

Followers of the Islamic faith have as their place of worship, the mosque. In the year 622 A.D., the Prophet Muhammad fled from Mecca to the City of Medina where his house was used as a place for prayer. This house became the first mosque and place of worship.

In 629 Muhammad returned to Mecca, the city of his birth. There we find the Great Mosque which is the focus of Muslim worship. All other mosques are constructed along a line that is projected or leading to Mecca. A wall of the mosque is constructed perpendicular to that line. It is called the Qibla wall and parallel to this wall are rows along which the faithful kneel to pray, all facing Mecca.

Five times a day over one billion Muslims around the world face Mecca in their prayers to Allah. On Fridays, it is compulsory for all male Muslims to go to the mosque for prayer.

Although the present mosque on Moodie Drive is small in size and the number of members is a very small fraction of the total Muslim population of the world, the fervour of prayer, the strength of religious conviction is no less than that which would be found in any other mosque, no matter where it might be or no matter its size.

The Muslim community requires a new and much larger mosque for all their religious activities, for the development of Muslim youth and to have the space for all other activities that might be undertaken. It is a requirement, a just requirement that needs to be met.

A number of residents of Bells Corners have objected to the construction of a new mosque on the property located adjacent to the older mosque and facing Richmond Road were for a variety of reasons. One major problem that has been experienced in the past has been that of parked cars on the streets close to the mosque during the Friday prayer time. It has been suggested that even with the many additional parking spots made available for the new mosque, there might still be a continuing street parking problem. Yet, a solution may be found if permission is granted by number of organization to have their properties used for parking purposes during prayer times. It is this spirit of cooperation that may lead to the City to finally approve the site plan proposal.

There are many beautiful mosques around the world that reflect the architectural genius of both non-Muslim and Muslim architects. Today we find with the rapid expansion in the number of followers of the Islamic faith and the oil-wealth from Islamic nations, more mosques are being built using designs by contemporary Muslim architects. In fact, there are awards for mosque designs coming from the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

Although minarets were not part of the architecture of the earlier mosques, they came into use about 100 years after the first mosques were built. The minarets served as an excellent way to project the voice of the person calling the worshippers to prayer. In addition, the minarets served as structures of beauty, as embellishments to the mosques and because of their heights could be seen for many miles. The minaret on the proposed mosque should prove to be an attractive feature for the southern landscape of Bells Corners. It will be seen for miles across the greenbelt. It will serve as a symbol of tolerance and goodwill, of freedom and justice to all.

What might that be? DISCRIMINATION!

When I was young, I felt DISCRIMINATION.

Same language, but different religion yielded DISCRIMINATION.

Later, same religion, but different language yielded DISCRIMINATION.

Then I heard about members of one religious group who were not able to find overnight accommodation at some motels or hotels; for them, there were never any rooms available. As to being able to join particular clubs, for them there were no ways to join, yielding DISCRIMINATION.

Today, based on colour, culture, language and religion, we still have many forms of DISCRIMINATION.

If one has all four bases, DISCRIMINATION can overpowering, in fact, to be different based on any of those four bases can lead to DISCRIMINATION.

Where can DISCRIMINATION be found? Here, there and everywhere; the list can be long. One primary area where DISCRIMINATION can be found is in the world of work where selections for employment and later for promotion opportunities exist.

Sometimes DISCRIMINATION can be very subtle and very hard to prove. Sometimes it can be fought and even if the case is won, the perpetrator most often remains in power or control and in more subtle ways, DISCRIMINATION continues.

All DISCRIMINATION is hurtful, and is always remembered. Those who have felt DISCRIMINATION will tell stories which are always the same when it comes to pain and suffering.

Even in our world of today, we see massive, extensive and most terrible forms of DISCRIMINATION in genocide and in racial cleansing.

Will DISCRIMINATION ever end? I doubt it very much!

It behooves those of us who are opposed to DISCRIMINATION, to do all that is in our power to do the right things to eliminate it, in every way possible.

In the name of justice, ethics and morality, we must stand up to DISCRIMINATION, wherever and whenever it rears its ugly head.

Tarred by the same brush

Although, in general, the public has a low trust for politicians and lawyers, there are many politicians who are trust worthy and many lawyers, as well.

It is most unfortunate that some politicians have acted in ways that are viewed as most inappropriate and even sometimes, illegal; the same holds true for lawyers.

The Gomery Commission has brought out testimony that has caused the Canadian public to question the activities of supposed upright Canadian citizens.

I have found that people are talking about the inquiry. It is a topic of conversation that often results in comments that are rather negative towards the Liberal Party and those sentiments fall on the shoulders of liberal politicians. Most Liberal politicians have had absolutely nothing to do with “The Scandal”, yet they are recipients of some abusive comments. That is rather unfortunate.

Perhaps the Liberals have been in power too long. That is probably the sense of the people at the present time. Will there be an election? The Liberals would like to put any election off to a much later date. They would like to delay until after the Gomery report which is due in December. At that time, later and preferably much later would be in the best interest of Liberal politicians.

The mood of the country at the present time would give the Conservative Party the preferred position of providing the leadership in a minority government. Some additional time for the Gomery Commission to provide additional damning testimony would work to the benefit of the Conservatives. In addition the Conservatives do not want to “force” an election because many Canadians do not want to have another election so soon after the last one. They hope that the mood for an election will heighten to the point where the public will “demand” that an election be held, to “kick the bums out”, which may be very inappropriate for most of the politicians are not guilty of any wrong-doing but have been “tarred by the same brush.”

A photographic error?

Along side an article concerning the mosque that is to be built, as mentioned in yesterday’s blog, appears a photograph of a private residence. This home is rather large and features a dome-like third floor. Many residents in the area actually believed that it was the new mosque, as earlier signs indicated, would be built on Moodie Drive. In fact, the original mosque site and the new mosque site became the subject of a By-Law change, and later, an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board. The new sign indicates a new address for Richmond Road as well as the old sign with an address for Moodie Drive.

Now, does that photograph have any relationship with the new mosque that is to built? Yes! It just happens that the new mosque structure will be directly behind the residence that was photographed. Was there a photographic error? Yes! Do good things ever come of errors? Well, yes, sometimes to the person committing the error and sometimes, others as well. I believe that the photographer will learn a lesson and the error has stimulated some discussion in the community. For me, as an individual tax payer, it generated a series of questions.

Now, that photograph reminded me that questions needed to be asked of City Hall. This matter generated a listing of eight questions with a final statement that, if there were any violations in the construction of that residence, my letter would be deemed to be a complaint.

If in fact the turret on that residence was an illegal structure, it probably would have to be removed. This would make any number of residents happy as that home is now viewed by many as an “eye sore”. To my knowledge, there is no other structure like this one, anywhere in the City of Ottawa, or perhaps anywhere else. It is really unique!

First Visit to a Mosque

Last night I made my first visit to a mosque, the house of prayer for followers of the Islamic faith. This opportunity was presented for I was to discuss with the Imam, the plans for the construction of a new mosque to accommodate an expanding community.

During this visit some time was taken out for the Imam to lead the sunset prayer, one of the five times a day when Muslims are commanded to offer prayer. I was impressed with the ritual and very much with the attention and participation of those gathered for the prayer. One has to admire the dedication of these men as followers of Muhammad, are to be honoured and respected.

Later, the Imam described through prayer and the use of the Qur’an, with words from the Prophet Muhammad, a glimpse of elements of the Islamic faith.

One purpose of the visit was to review plans for a new mosque that should be built on a property facing Richmond Road in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The supporting eight architectural drawings revealed the plans for a beautiful mosque that, when built, will meet the needs of a growing Muslim community in the western part of Ottawa.

Some things to think about…

On Sunday I took a walk along a stretch of Bank Street. My attention was caught by an advertisement that included the following:

“The highest courage is to dare to be you in the face of adversity. Choosing right over wrong, ethics over convenience, and truth over popularity…these are the choices that measure your life. Travel the path of integrity without looking back, for there is never a wrong time to do the right thing.” Anonymous

There is much here to think about. How do we choose to measure our lives? How often do we even stop to think about our hopes and aspirations; why we hold these and what are we doing to achieve them?

Here are a few words that I penned as a prayer that reflects a framework within which an individual might dedicate time for thought and activity that will produce positive outcomes in living.

Pray to God to have the courage to face adversity in its many forms; to have the moral conviction to live under ethical principles; to search for the truth and to do what is right; to be guided by a respect for all of society, in humility and with love.

There are times during the year when individuals do make resolutions. One particular time is that of New Years day, but there is no better time to do so than this present moment. Think about this and do it now!

Today is cloudless and clear. The air is crisp and when lung-filled, man should want to live forever! The tulips in my garden are growing, having poked through the melting snow some ten days ago. What a delight to see the strawberry plants flourishing and within a couple of months the first delicious berries will be eaten.

I always look forward to the 21st of March and more so to the early days of April when the snow on my garden melts away. During these days, the snow in the forest continues to melt and most of the pathways can not be traveled without leaving them to find ways to get around the water that fills the lower areas on pathways and the many pockets and small ponds off the beaten track. Nonetheless, I walk the woods where I think and pray.

For me, the woods and forests of Canada have always produced a calming and relaxing feeling, inducing a sense of freedom. The life there is one of harmony and balance, one of responding to the light of day, the heat of the sun and the rains that fall from the heavens.

Birds that have not wintered-over are retuning. Flocks of Canada geese started to return two weeks ago, with their loud honking to be heard during the day and during the night. Somehow, the ubiquitous mosquito has returned. The cold nights and cool days have delayed their reawakening but the few are harbingers of the evenings of the near future when some people become driven to borderline frenzies. I think I hear their buzzing now. No, it is but my remembering the sounds and the imminent bite, the suffering and later irritation. This brings back memories of summers in Quebec where the torture of bites during the night must have been created to counter balance the pleasures and delights of the day with the swimming, canoeing, fishing, delicious food, and the glorious hot sun. These memories are from the days of my youth, the many summer days during the long period of the Second World War. Those were the days when mosquito repellants and penicillin did not exist, at least, not for me.

The word penicillin brings back memories of the first time, in the summer of ’48, when an infection caused my leg to swell about the knee to three times its normal size. They say the infection was the result of a scratch received while sliding into second base during a baseball game in New Jersey. I had to go to a hospital in the city of Elizabeth, close to a harbour, where the fog horns seemed to keep me awake all night, when in fact, I could not sleep well, as I could not roll over because of the swollen leg and the some considerable pain that I experienced. I don’t remember any pain killers but I remember well, the size of the needle and the pain in my butt at the time of the injections and later. Three days and three injections; after the first, the next two were not looked forward to with any delight! That needle seemed to me to have been more appropriate for an animal, the size of a horse. I remember as well, my second-time experience with that miracle drug and a much smaller needle. It was during the winter of ’52, when I developed a severe allergic reaction to penicillin, that drug, never to be taken again.

After our last, long and somewhat cold winter, the lengthening daylight during these days of spring is a joy, in and of itself. The warm days of our “short” spring and those of the “short” fall seasons are ideal for long walks. During the “long” summer days, although long walks can be taken, the best times for these are during the early morning or late hours of the day. For me the days for walking long distances are here and I can’t wait to get out doors today for perhaps my last walk in the woods as the final melting of the snow will take place over the next few days, resulting in many flooded areas along most of the trails. After a three or four week period, the many trees of the forests will begin to fill in, grasses will be growing, the snakes and frogs will be out; the snakes to be seen and the frogs to be heard. And, I can't wait for the trilliums to be in bloom in those areas of our land that support their growth.

Yes, today is a beautiful day, a day to be enjoyed, a day for a long walk and a day to be remembered.

Trilliums

Diamonds may be precious,
But more precious to me,
Are trilliums in full bloom,
With many there to see.

Their life span is so short,
As is yours and mine,
Can we be so appreciated,
With lives that are less fine?

Some trillium are pink,
Some trilliums are white,
They all bring forth vitality,
And make our hearts so light.

In the quiet of the forest,
The trilliums all do sound,
In orchestrated fashion,
Of beauty to be found.

What a loss there would be,
If trilliums did not exist,
Our lives so much poorer,
With less beauty in the mist.

History has been made…

This past week has provided two major historical events, both of a religious nature, the death and burial of a Pope, the head of the Church of Rome and the marriage of an individual who might become the next head of the Church of England.

I believe that a record for the most hours of television watching during any one week was achieved. It has been said that Pope John Paul II was the most identifiable person in the history of the world as he has been seen by so many, in person and on television. He could be the person responsible for the most positive and negative happenings in the history of the world. He has been praised for his activities relating to the freedom of Europe from the grip of Communism. On the other hand, he has been criticized for his position on women becoming priests, on permission for the clergy to marry, on abortion, and on contraception. He was too conservative for many Catholics.

The marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, which had been postponed by one day because of the burial of Pope John Paul, has brought a measure of closure to the problem of their long-time relationship. Camilla has moved from a position of vilification to that of the second ranking female in the Royal Family. As time passes, the English people will come to accept Camilla as worthy to be named Queen of England and would be eligible for that title if ever Charles accedes to the throne.

A minor historical event of last week was that the death of Prince Rainier III of Monaco. His wedding to Grace Kelly, the American actress, in 1956 was a highlight of high society of the day. His son Albert has become Prince Albert II, the sovereign prince of Monaco.

Shocking testimony

Testimony from the Gomery Commission this past week has provided us with some shocking information. In fact, it has continued to provide revealing and startling information. What are we to believe? What can we do?

I have almost had my “fill.” It has become almost too much to take. In fact, during the early stages of the hearings, I would follow the inquiry by viewing television for a real-time experience, if not actual participation, listening to the words and seeing the expression of the questioner but more so the person giving the testimony, I would follow by viewing the highlights on news broadcasting.

What we believe sometimes is based on how prejudiced we might be. When two witnesses provide two somewhat different testimonials, who do we tend to believe? Why do we believe what we do?

The Liberal party has lost much support, in particular from those voters who decided during the late days of the last campaign to vote Liberal. The voters this time will take out their anger generated by the past “sins” of the party on the Liberal party members who will be running. Some few Liberals who can retire with nice pensions and benefits will do so. They will not want to have to defend the party before a hostile electorate, even though they, as individuals, could be “pure as the naked heavens.”

Will the testimony to date bring on a vote of non-confidence in the party in power, leading to another election? I believe it will.

A couple of months ago, the Conservatives did not want to make the motion leading to an election that the public did not want. To have brought down the government at that time would have been a negative step, resulting in a loss of votes. Today, that is not quite the case. It would be preferable to the Conservatives to have another party bring on the downfall of the Liberals. In any case, we can expect an election before summer and I predict that Stephen Harper will be our next prime minister.

Americanization of Canada

We Canadians who speak English and some who speak French are descending very rapidly down the slippery slope to becoming Americanized, for example, the Canadian military.

Americans love land and all that it signifies, room to grow, wealth, agriculture, mining, forests, open spaces for recreation and many other activities. From the exploration days of Lewis and Clark of two hundred years ago, we have seen the westward expansion of the United States of America.

One hundred and fifty years ago the Mormons opened a mission in Las Vegas. Today, most Americans and Canadians are familiar with the fun, pleasure and games city of Los Vegas. I know of it only through advertisements in publications and on the television. I shall probably never go there; I have no interest in that type of life style, yet many Canadians do; they love the place!

One hundred years ago the American automobile was being used on Canadian roads. A pattern and way of life crossed the border without experiencing any difficulty. Our way of life was affected by changing technology, without any consideration of a border dividing the two countries. In all areas of living, as Americans changed so did Canadians.

Fifty years ago, in fact three years earlier, I bought my first car, a 1952 Ford; the car was built in Canada. That car permitted me to drive great distances in both Canada and the Unites States. Although I viewed my first television programming in the pre-fifties in the United States, it was about fifty years ago that Canadian skyline was changed by the mounting of thousands of television antennas on roof tops; these antennas are all but gone, the passing of an era!

And today we see the proliferation of computers, cellular phones, digital cameras and a wide variety of other high technological equipment and materials; we see the results of massive changes in agricultural developments as well as those in industry and business. All these changes, coupled with the ownership of property in the forms of houses, televisions sets, other goods and the ubiquitous automobiles and transport trucks, with the development of millions of miles of black-top roadways necessary for transportation in Canada, clearly signify that there is little difference between our societies.

All this to say that over the space of some two hundred years, major changes can be seen in the ways people live. Yet, through all of these years the sociological elements and conditions between the two countries have not caused a division; rather there has been a parallelism of ventures. And, the most influential cause of this parallelism was that of the mechanical and electronic revolutions during the past one hundred years. If we confine ourselves to examining the world of entertainment and communication, whatever the United States had, the Canadians were not far behind. In film, radio, transportation by air or on land, television, newspapers, magazines and books, there was little to differentiate the two countries. As Americans lived, we in Canada did as well.

For all of the elements characterizing the parallelism that exists, there are some major differences. These relate mostly to politics and language and not to religion or economics. In Canada the legal institutions and how the government functions is somewhat different from those in the United States When it comes to language, Canada has adapted to a state of entrenched bilingualism with government being greatly influenced by a large French speaking minority. The same can not be said of the large Spanish speaking minority in the United States. That minority has not been able to influence the American government as has been the case in Canada where the Francophone majority has exerted power far beyond their numbers should deserve and this has been rather well accepted, mostly to preserve Canada as one nation; a nation with two official languages.

Though there are some differences in the ways we live, these do not become barriers or prevent Canadians from being influenced by the North American Anglophone culture. American stars of the film, television and the music industry are our stars as well. And as time goes on, we are becoming more like Americans, yet we continue to be Canadians. I have no desire to ever be identified as being American but I enjoy the benefits of being so close and so much like them. I accept all the good that I choose from American society there yet maintain the values coming from my Canadian heritage. We Canadians are fortunate in that regard.

I believe that our Canadian military needs to become Americanized. We need to profit from all that is good from their military. We need to plan our training techniques and our supply of equipment based on the best that is available from the Americans. We need to have a common territorial and defence system include that of missile defence. We should call this the harmonization of our military.

It should be understood that Canadian sovereignty would not be compromised to any extent that it would be of any value beyond the posturing of political party that serves as the opposition

The Americanization of Canada does exist but it is not significant. The differences in our cultural, political and linguistic characteristics will stand in the way of total
Americanization.

In any family, two brothers may have the same family name and share in family values but they are unique individuals who respond to whatever occurs in their unique ways. There may be discussions and the giving of advice, the providing assistance and the sharing of particular necessities but how life proceeds is done independently. Canada is a sovereign nation, distinct in political, social and cultural ways from the United States that will never permit our being taken over by that powerful, the most powerful nation on earth. We are far from being equal in any way apart from the fact that each of us has a love for people and culture and our individual countries. We will always stand together yet, separately.
It is with respect for one another that we can exist as neighbours, American and Canadian!
